Services set this weekend for Joan E. Ward of Old Forge, 73

Joan E. Ward, 73, of Old Forge and formerly of Turin, NY, died February 26, 2014 at home with her family by her side after a long battle with cancer.

She was born March 9, 1940, in Lowville, NY, a daughter of Miles H. and Elizabeth (Rocker) Benedict. Joan Ward photo

Joan received her education at General Martin Central School in Glenfield, NY. Joan married William L. Ward on May 28, 1960, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Lowville, NY.

Mrs. Ward had a longtime career in banking, retiring from both Adirondack Bank and Community Bank of Old Forge. She most recently worked part-time at Kinney Drugs.  Continue reading

Summer service planned for Carol Louise Gape, 75

Carol Louise Gape, 75, passed away quietly in her sleep Friday, February 20, 2014 at her home in Bradenton, FL. She was born on December 19, 1938  in Jamestown, NY to Clara and Harry Menz, the fourth of five children.

She is survived by her loving husband, A. Raymond Gape, whom she married 57 years ago on November 17, 1956. Continue reading

Snofest: Sneak Peak snowmobile event returns to Old Forge on March 7, 8 & 9

The George T. Hiltebrant Recreation Center on North Street will be the site of the Central Adirondack Association’s 7th annual Snofest event on March 7, 8, and 9th.

The four major snowmobile manufacturers: Arctic Cat, Polaris, Ski-Doo and Yamaha, will premier their 2015 models as Old Forge is once again a stop on the Sneak Peak Nationwide Tour, bringing snowmobile enthusiasts an opportunity to be the first to preview next year’s line of sleds and gear.

Demo rides will also be provided, weather permitting.

A whole new line up of activities is planned for the weekend event.  Continue reading

Town of Webb UFSD Board of Education meets Feb. 18th

The Town of Webb UFSD Board of Education held a meeting on Tuesday, February 18, where it took the actions summarized as follows (not official minutes).

Approved the Minutes of February 4, 2014 meeting.

Approved the Warrants and Claims.

Approved the Treasurer’s Reports for January 2014.

Approved the Committee on Special Education Recommendations.

All U14 Polar Bears named to NYS Championship Team

The entire Polar Bear U14 Alpine Race Team was named to the NY State Championship Team following their performance at an Intercouncil Race at Snow Ridge on Sunday, February 23rd.

The ladies and men have advanced to compete at races at Holiday Valley Ski Area in Ellicottville on Saturday and Sunday, March 1 and 2 and at Windham Mountain Resort in the Catskills on March 8 and 9th.
