Children’s used books sale slated Dec. 7th

The Old Forge Library will hold a Children’s Used Books Sale on Saturday, December 7 from 11a.m. to 3 p.m.

Those interested can stop by and browse for stocking stuffers, or just to pick up a few books to encourage kids to continue reading over Christmas vacation.

Those attending will be able to warm up with complimentary hot cocoa and coffee.

Time and again Bill Hasenauer proved himself a successful Forestport leader

To the Editor:

The recent election for the Forestport Town Super-visor once again proves how very important each and every vote is, be it in a primary, on Election Day, or in absentee balloting.

The Town of Forestport has been served very well under the capable, successful, and experienced leadership of Supervisor William Hasenauer.

Bill’s understanding of people, their problems and community needs and concerns have been met with a firm, fair, and consistent hand over the years of his terms in office. Continue reading

Webb Board of Ed. meets, Webb Way winning grades announced

The Town of Webb UFSD Board of Education held a meeting on Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at 6:30 p.m., where it took the following action. This report is a summary and does not represent approved minutes:

Approved the Minutes of November 5, 2013 meeting.

Approved the Warrants and Claims.

Approved the Treasurer’s Report for October 2013.

Approved the Committee on Special Education Recommenda-tions.

Approved the Tax Collector’s Report

Approved returning the unpaid taxes to the counties by November 15, 2013, the Town of Webb portion being $1,601,661.60, with a Forestport amount of $46,934.78, for a total of $1,648,596.38.

Approved the appointment of Substitute Teacher Aide: Nicole Levensailor

Approved the appointment of Girls’ Modified Basketball Coach – Colin Clark.

Ernest R. Steltzer, 89, passes away

Ernest R. Steltzer, 89, of Belleville, PA and Twitchell Lake, NY and formerly of Phoenix, NY passed away on Sunday, November 17, 2013, at Valley View Haven in Belleville.

Born on August 29, 1924 in Granville, PA, he was the son of the late Walter L. and Edna (Fisher) Steltzer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Charles Steltzer, and one great granddaughter.

Ernest is survived by his wife, Irene Ruth (Appleton) Steltzer. They were married on December 28, 1946 in Floral Park, NY.

Dorothy B. Taaffe, Red Cross director, dies at 99

Dorothy B. Taaffe, 99, past director of the American Red Cross Office of International Services, long-time Washington, DC volunteer, and World War II military hospital aide, died at home in Washington, DC on October 23, 2013 of cardiovascular disease.

From 1974 until her retirement in 1980, Dorothy Taaffe served as Director of the Office of International Services for the American Red Cross, which is responsible for coordination of Red Cross humanitarian response to worldwide natural or manmade disasters and to international incidents involving American citizens.

Dorothy Taaffe was born in Albany, NY on June 9, 1914 to James Tracey Taaffe, a lawyer in private practice, and Marie Bernardi Taaffe. Dorothy earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1936 from The College of Saint Rose, Albany, NY and an MA from Columbia University in 1939, after which she taught speech and drama at St. Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana. 27th Annual Quilts Unlimited, basketry exhibitions on display at View

The 27th Annual Quilts Unlimited Exhibition, an open juried competition that is currently on display at View, features a collection of 116 traditional and eclectic quilts and wall hangings created by quilters from all over the United States.

Accompanying the exhibit is the unique basketry of Flo Hoppe of Rome. B001

Hoppe, an artist, author and international instructor has been making baskets since the 1970’s, having developed her unique style from studying with master basket makers from around the world.

The exhibits can be viewed Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.

Admission is $8 for non-members and $4 for members. Groups of 10 or more will be discounted $2 per person. Children under 12 are admitted free.

2013 Snowmobile Shootout set for December 13th at Woodgate

American Snowmobiler magazine’s annual shootout trials are scheduled for Friday, December 13, at the White Otter Fish & Game Club grounds at 10914 Woodgate Rd. in Woodgate.

Held on the club’s quarter-mile drag strip, this year’s event marks the 24th  year these tests have been conducted.

Participating snowmobiles from different manufacturers are selected at random from box stock at various area dealers.

They are taken to the DynoTech Research Center in Batavia, NY where they are put through computerized dynamometer tests to ensure that they are typical “box stock.” Dyno test comparisons of the stock machines are posted on www.dynotechresearch.com. Continue reading
