It was this way when we bought it! Grandfathering and code violations

What happens when you buy a property? Do code violations automatically go away? Is everything automatically grandfathered? Or, does everything have to be brought up to current codes? Is there a statute of limitations?

The answer to each of these questions is no… everything actually stays the same.

This comes up quite often. Someone buys a property, with a building and/or business, and assumes that the building needs all sorts of changes to be compliant to current building and fire codes.  Continue reading →

Greatest holiday gifts: Memories created with friends and family

Many a sappy Hallmark movie has tried to uplift our holiday moods from sad and grumpy to festive and filled with joy. But it is no small task. Uncertain weather, lack of funds for gift giving, or unsettled family dynamics can cause stress when it comes to holiday get-togethers.

For me, I am pretty sure that I have always loved everything about the holidays.

My earliest memories are of frosted-over windows, the bottoms of my footie pajamas almost frozen to our bare wood floors, and wood smoke that made our eyes water when an arctic breeze pushed back the flue and sent it billowing through the house.

Of road trips on snow-filled days to spend time with relatives over plates brimming with more food than we could possibly eat. The naps, laughter, giggles of children and  pets scurrying for cover.  Continue reading →

View will kick-off winter by presenting the Warren Miller action-packed ski film, Ticket to Ride, on Friday, December 6 at 7 p.m.

Ticket to Ride is the 64th in a series of films produced by Miller and includes footage of the world’s best skiers and snowboarders as they tackle the steepest peaks at destinations including Alaska, Montana’s Big Sky Country, as well as Kazakhstan, Iceland, Greenland, Norway and Switzerland. When justice trumps arrogance, sit back and give a little smile

The word “shame” shows up an awful lot in our culture. There’s The Walk of Shame (Usually in the wee morning hours. C’mon, you know you’ve been there.); The Shame Train (What kids refer to the school bus once they’ve entered high school); The Wall of Shame (Where no one wants to see his/her own selfie); and The Cone of Shame (Poor post-op doggies.)

There are probably a ton of other shame scenarios, but there’s just not adequate space to list them all. A plethora of sappy romance novels constantly refer to “what the eyes say,” but unh uh, I say it’s all in the grin.

I call it The Smile of Shame, my friends, and I feel I’ve dubbed this one all by myself. Anyone who doesn’t admit to enjoying a Smile of Shame now and again is either a saint or a big fat liar in my book.  Continue reading →

Worth noting town’s lesser details

To the Editor:

Just a thought… When talking of someone taking action, or lack of action, it is often asked “who’s driving the bus?”

Implying that whoever the name, is to be blamed (or credited) with a specific action or lack thereof.

In our town government however, the phrase should be changed to “who’s flying the plane?”

I suggest this change of thought based on the number of operators of large commercial airplanes.

While the bus just has the one driver, a large jet has the pilot, co-pilot and a navigator or two.

The comparison to our not so small Town of Webb government is simple. While each department (10+ departments at last count) has its own Department Head, they do not operate in a vacuum. There is of course the Town Supervisor. In addition, there are the four Town Council members. Two of which are liason to each Department.  Continue reading →

Tally birds at feeders and in woods for Old Forge Christmas Count

We are having a little early winter weather and so are most of the other parts of the country. Many places in the southwest that hardly ever see snow have it, while some others have ice to contend with.

I’ll take snow anytime over ice as its less hazardous to driving conditions and power lines.

Many got more precipitation in the form of snow than they normally get all year.

Most folks have just radial tires and no snow tires because they never see that stuff, as evidenced by all the accidents on the highways. Continue reading →

Dress your dog for Inlet’s Holiday Parade

The annual Holiday Dog Parade is a crowd-pleasing component of Inlet’s Adirondack Christmas on Main Street event. The parade will be held on Saturday, November 30 beginning at 4 p.m. from the parking lot near the Church of the Lakes.

Dress your pooch in its holiday best and parade it through town to the Inlet Town Hall. Every canine participant will receive a treat, compliments of the Adirondack Reader.

As an added attraction, Dave Scranton of Adirondack Images Photography will be taking professional photos of pets in their holiday costumes from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in front of the fireplace at Screamen Eagle Pizza.  Continue reading →
