Hundreds of cyclists are gearing up to compete in the 18th Annual Black Fly Challenge bike race that will begin with a shotgun start in Indian Lake on Saturday, June 8th.

The intense 40-mile race takes riders through the Moose River Recreation Area to the finish line in Inlet. Every year, the Black Fly Challenge brings visitors to the area from across the country, including over 500 racers, their families and friends.

Thanks to Mohawk Valley GIS, this year’s participants can now download a free smart phone application at NYRECWebMap.com that will work without cell phone reception and provide riders with maps and information about their trek.

Last year’s event saw a number of records being broken including the best men’s and women’s finishing times. Continue reading

CAP-21 and the Central Adirondack Association are co-sponsors of an upcoming fund-raising event that will celebrate the 90th anniversary of The Strand Theatre of Old Forge.

The two organizations have formed a committee to plan the event that will help to ensure the survival of The Strand, a cornerstone of Old Forge. Continue reading

Inlet invites participants for for 4th annual Memory Walk

The 4th Annual Memory Walk, an event that helps to raise funds for Alzheimer’s research will be held Saturday, June 15, 2013 in Inlet.

Teams are being formed and donations are being collected online or by those who will be participating in the walk.

This year’s event is dedicated in the memory of Lorraine Stripp, a longtime resident of Old Forge who succumbed to the disease on July 31, 2011.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. at the Inlet Town Hall building in Arrowhead Park and the walk starts at 10 a.m.  Continue reading

View hosts Neighbor Day open house, Sun., June 9

Friends and neighbors are invited for a day of fun at View on Sunday, June 9 for the annual Neighbor Day. Neighbor Day is an open house event that can be enjoyed by the whole family.

It will include entertainment, activities, demos and a chicken BBQ and will take place from noon to 4 p.m.

The Moose Radio will be broadcasting live from View and Ellen Drake will play the piano.

The chicken BBQ will be sold and served by North Woods Lodge Masons & Dewey-Old Forge Order of the Eastern Star.

Hamburgers and hot dogs can be purchased from the members of Kiwanis Key Club with proceeds benefiting local food pantries.

CAP-21’s Flower Basket Potting Party set June 12

The Central Adirondack Partnership for the 21st Century (CAP-21) will be holding its 15th Annual Hanging Flower Basket Party on Wednesday, June 12 from 4 p.m., at the George T. Hiltebrant Recreation Center and Pavilion on North Street in Old Forge.

All are welcome to come and dig in the dirt. Just bring some gardening gloves and a gardening shovel or trowel.

CAP-21 will provide a light dinner and cold or hot drinks, depending on the weather. For planning purposes, anyone who would like to help out is asked to call (315) 369-3353.

Celebration of Life set June 15 for Major Bowes

A celebration of the life of C. V. “Major” Bowes, who passed away on October 25, 2012, will be held Saturday, June 15 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the Main Lodge at Covewood in Big Moose.

All are invited to come and share stories and memories of Major. The family would like all to come dressed in comfortable, casual clothing.

Goodsell Museum participating in state’s Museum Week, June 10-16

The Goodsell Museum, headquarters for the Town of Webb Historical Association in Old Forge, will be participating in New York State Museum Week the week of June 10 through 16.

The annual event promotes visitation to museums throughout the state.

The Goodsell Museum is located at 2993 State Route 28 across the street from the Old Forge Post Office.

It houses the history of the Town of Webb, the largest township in Herkimer County, and encompasses the hamlets of McKeever, Thendara, Old Forge, Eagle Bay, as well as lake communities such as Beaver River, Big Moose, Twitchell Lake, Stillwater, and Okara Lakes.   Continue reading
