Services held for Tabatha M. Harris, 35

Tabatha M. Harris, age 35, died unexpectedly on Monday, November 12, 2012.

She is survived by her longtime boyfriend, Joshua Rommel; two children, Trisha (Mathue) Simmons and Shyanne Harris; grandson, Eli Simmons; parents, Teresa (James) Cavanaugh of Shortsville and William (Deb) Morgan of Eagle Bay; seven sisters, Andrea (Joe) McDurfee, Tonia (Greg) Hess, Heather McNeil (Rob Trask), Colletta (Mark) Francese, Christina Norris, Elliejo (Steve) Bonacci and Victoria Preston; two brothers, Charles Morgan and William O. Morgan Jr.; and several nieces and nephews.

Tabatha was a graduate of Red Jacket High School, class of 1994. She enjoyed art, music, four-wheeling, truck mud-runs and spending time with her family.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, November 13 at Johnson Kennedy Funeral Home. Interment followed at Woodlawn Cemetery, Canandaigua. Memorial gifts may be directed to the family.

‘Let It Snow’ race seeking gift bag donations

The “Let It Snow” 5K Run/Walk Committee is putting together Swag Bags for participants of the road race which will be held in Old Forge on Sunday, December 2 and is seeking business sponsors interested in including their promotional materials in the bags.

Donations can range from discount coupons for merchandise or food to promotional materials bearing the name of the sponsoring business.

So far, the bags will include a long sleeve t-shirt bearing the “Let it Snow” logo, items from ACE Hardware and Kinney Drugs, and the trademark Henry the Hardware Bear stickers from the Old Forge Hardware.

At least 144 are expected to participate in the event.

Anyone interested in providing something for the bags is asked to deliver them to Beth Tickner at the Water’s Edge Inn no later than Tuesday, November 27. Beth can be contacted at beth@WatersEdgeInn.com or by calling 369- 2484 ext. 309.

Adirondack Scenic Railroad adds extra run of popular Santa Train

The Adirondack Scenic Railroad’s Santa Train will provide trips from Thendara Station to Otter Lake and back on Saturday and Sunday, November 23 and 24, and Saturday, December 1.

Santa Train trips will depart from Thendara Station at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. each day.

Mrs. Claus will be on board and young passengers and their parents will be treated to stories and games along the way.

Upon return to the station, Mrs. Claus will escort everyone across the street to Candy Land at the Thendara Town Hall, where the children will meet Santa Claus, enjoy hot chocolate and other goodies, and play a wide variety of classic games. Continue reading

Old Forge Ballet announces cast for 2012 Nutcracker

Sue Ann Lorenz-Wallace, Artistic Director and Linda Lorenz LaDue, Consultant of TheOld Forge Ballet Company have announced the  cast for the company’s annual “Nutcracker” ballet which will be  performed at the Strand Theatre in Old Forge on Saturday, December 1.

A few new faces will be seen among ballet company members who have been performing in the local production for the past nineteen years.

The cast includes over 30 individuals representing the com munities of Eagle Bay, Inlet,Indian Lake, Old Forge, Thendara, Woodgate and Forestport.

Laurie Waranis, an instructor at the Old Forge Ballet Company and Clint Otto, a newcomer, are cast respectively as Frau and Herr Stahlbaum, hosts of the 1800’s Christmas party in Germany where the ballet is set.

Bowl-A-Thon to benefit MAC’s Safe Ride, Dec. 1

Volunteer drivers and navigators of MAC’s Safe Ride will sponsor a fundraising Bowl-a-Thon at Greco’s Bar & Grill on North Street in Old Forge on Saturday, December 1. Bowlers will collect pledges from donors based on how many pins they knock down in a game.

A minimum of five cents per pin is requested. Checks can be made payable to: MAC’s Safe Ride.

The Greco Family has donated the use of the lanes for the event which will begin at 7:30 p.m. The restaurant will be open serving its regular menu and there will be a cash bar.

Pledge sheets can be picked up from Nanci Russell at the Town of Webb Clerk’s Office and must be returned to her by noon on Friday, November 30. MAC’s van will be operating as usual that evening from 8 p.m. to 2:30 a.m.

Big Moose Ambulance Co. elects officers for 2013

The Big Moose Ambulance Company, Inc. (BMAC) has elected its new officers to serve for 2013.

Sarah Dew was elected president; Steve Baker, vice president; and Roger Pratt, secretary and treasurer.

The Big Moose Ambulance Company provides pre-hospital medical care and transportation, as well as deep woods rescue, in remote sections of Northern Herkimer county from west of Moss Lake to the Lewis county line, including the hamlets of Big Moose Lake, Big Moose Station, Twitchell Lake, Stillwater and Beaver River.

With its High-Rail Rescue, BMAC also covers 32 miles along the Adirondack Scenic Railroad corridor from Carter Station to Sabattis.

Tips for keeping yourself safe around downed power lines

We have had several bad wind storms in the past month that brought down numerous trees and power lines.

Downed or low hanging power lines are very dangerous and can be fatal if you come in contact with one.

I would like to offer you the following tips to keep in mind if you happen to encounter a downed power line.

Always assume the line is “live” and electicity is flowing through it, even if it is not sparkingor smoking.

Stay far away from lines that are on the ground. Electricity can travel a long distance from the line, especially if the ground is wet.

Even if you know the difference between power lines, cable lines, and telephone lines, never touch any of them. Continue reading
