Niccolls Boutique: Thrift shop continues offering quality goods to area residents

The Niccolls Memorial Church Thrift Shop has seen drastic growth in its 40 years of service to the Old Forge area and surrounding communities, offering quality gently used clothing and home goods at incredibly low prices.

Each week, a team of volunteers meets in the basement of Niccolls Church to sort through and organize the abundance of articles that have been generously donated by the community.

With each passing week, they are so in awe of the quality of the goods before them that they now affectionately refer to the shop as “Niccolls Boutique.” Continue reading

DEC anounces proposal to guide Spruce Grouse’s recovery in NYS

A Spruce Grouse Recovery Plan proposal has been announced by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and is available for public review and comment, according to a department spokesperson.

The spruce grouse is a New York state endangered bird restricted to a handful of lowland boreal (northern) forest habitats in the Adirondack Mountains.

The recovery plan provides a comprehensive review of the spruce grouse and proposes a strategy for preventing the loss of this species from the state. Continue reading

2011 ties for safest hunting year in NY state history, DEC reports

The 2011 hunting season tied 2009 for New York State’s safest year of hunting on record based on the number of hunting-related shooting incidents, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).

In the 2011 hunting seasons, 26 personal injury hunting-related shooting incidents were reported, including four fatalities.

All of the fatalities occurred during the regular deer season, one of which was self-inflicted. Continue reading

Climate Change: DEC discusses fish, wildlife, plant adaptation

A public meeting was held in Albany on Thursday, February 9 to discuss the National Fish, Wildlife and Plants Climate Adaptation Strategy, which is currently in draft form.

It was co-hosted by The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies.

The strategy is intended to reduce negative impacts of climate change on fish, wildlife, plants and the natural systems they depend upon.

It will guide the nation’s efforts during the next five years and involves agencies and groups from across the nation. Continue reading

Town of Webb Board of Education meets

The Town of Webb UFSD Board of Education held a meeting on Tuesday, February 7, where it took the following action:

• Approved the Minutes of January 31st meeting

• Approved the Warrants and Claims

• Accepted the intent to retire of Ronald Smith, 7-12 Science teacher, with regret and appreciation for his years of service, effective June 30, 2012.

• Approved the Committee on Special Education Recommendations.

• Approved the Appointment of Substitutes: Nurse – Danielle Beckingham; Teacher – Kelly Pratt; Teacher Aide – Kelly Pratt; Teacher – Matthew Brazell; Teacher Aide – Matthew Brazell; Teacher – Laura Eriksson; Teacher Aide – Laura Eriksson; Teacher – Melissa Peach; Teacher Aide – Melissa Peach. Thendara’s Ceil Buckley celebrates 99th Birthday

Ceil Buckley celebrated her 99th birthday on January 30, and marked the occasion at her Thendara home with family and friends.

Among those in attendance were Ceil’s son Mark of Norwich; daughter Betty and son-in-law Norman, and their children Evan, Joy, and Ada Rannels of Thendara.; nephews, Richard DeMoors (wife Linda and Linda’s mother) of Baldwinsville and Gerald DeMoors (wife Kathy and son Paul) of Weedsport; granddaughter Lynn Russell and husband Brett; great grandson John Paul Duguay and Sandy Fetterman and great great grandson Gabriel; and great granddaughter Yvonne Duguay.
