Outside the Box A Look at Webb Sports

Columbus Day Tournament returning this weekend with parade, pep rally, and plenty of soccer action

According to the weather man, we can expect the coming weekend to provide mild temperatures and sunny skies.

Considering the rather gloomy recent goings-on in the world of local high school soccer, the opportunity to come together as a community for the annual Columbus Day Tournament will be a welcome diversion.

No matter their respective team records, everyone looks forward to getting behind the boys and girls at the Allen Stripp Soccer Complex where student athletes past and present will strut their stuff. The celebration kicks off on Friday, October 7 with a parade, featuring floats created by the seventh through twelfth grade classes, each hoping to capture top honors. Continue reading

Talkin’ Code with Andrew Getty

Proper ways to insulate basements and crawl spaces

The Energy Code of New York [specific to single family homes] has been in a constant state of change for well over the past twenty years. Partly to keep up with the demands imposed by state and federal standards for energy conservation, and partly due to new concepts and materials being introduced into the market.

The most recent changes in the Energy Code became effective about this time, last year. Prescriptive methods and values are still allowed, but some of the requirements have changed. Continue reading

Gary Lee’s Daybreak to Twilight

Moose sightings continue to be reported in the area

Butterfly

The first official week of fall certainly felt as such. The winds blew, the rains came and many of the beautiful leaves fell to the ground. The view out my window is still pretty as the colors refract on the surface of the pond.

As Karen says, you can see the pond much better now. I hope you got to see the beautiful sunset on October 2. The reds bled through the clouds in the western sky making for a beautiful picture.

I hope members of Mark Bowie’s photography workshop at View got it as one of their shots during their three days with him. Some just finished a macro photography workshop with Les Saucier from North Carolina. These folks battled with the weather to get out and get some close up shots. Continue reading

Just Call me Mrs. Lucky by Jan From Woodgate

The queen of Walmart shoppers arrives in her chariot

Walmart. By now most of us have received many emails containing tons of pictures of Walmart shoppers.

Not pretty, to say the least. And as much as I’m not a fan of the giant superstore’s business practices, I simply cannot afford to buy my toilet paper anywhere else. So I go. And I laugh. And sometimes I want to cry. Take, for instance a recent visit on a Saturday morning.

This was an emergency venture as I always plan a Wally World shopping trip on early weekday mornings.

We were down to one roll—it was a have-to, and you can rest assured that my poor planning will not repeat itself. We’ll just use a catalog if need be, I believe it was Sears… It started right there in the parking lot. Way more crowded than I’m used to, so I had to wait to pull into a parking spot.

There, right before my eyes, an unspeakable crime unfolded. An elderly woman was patiently waiting, blinker on, for another shopper to back out of their spot. Along comes a beat-up Ford Pinto (yup, still running), which zips into the spot in front of the woman. Continue reading
