The Forge House: Owners, Proprietor & Managers, Part II

I now return to J. Milton Buell and Dr. George Desbrough, who on April 1, 1871, bought the 250-acre “Grant Lot” from the executors of Lyman R. Lyon’s Estate.

Before partnering with Desbrough, Buell, born in 1813, and his wife, Lucy Loomis Buell, were farmers in Westmoreland, N.Y. with a daughter, Sarah Adelaide (she preferred “S. Addie”).

They were living in Whitestown at the time of the 1860 census. Buell soon after became proprietor of Utica’s Mansion House which he operated for many years. Continue reading

Letter to the Editor: Candidate Jack Graham exhibits the character of a good man

To the Editor:

As we near the November Election Day event, we all will certainly experience a barrage of letters of support and calls for endorsement by many citizens and friends of the candidates seeking the leadership positions within our communities.

This is democracy at work, allowing for a system that promotes the freedom of candidates to seek election, but most important the freedom of the citizens to determine the outcome through our constitutional right to vote. In the past weeks of primaries and continued efforts of candidacy, we have heard of many opinions regarding the abilities and capabilities of those who seek office. Continue reading

Phoenix Dance Company bringing performance to View

Troupe to present signature athleticism, experimentation on October 14th

Phoenix Project Dance Company of Norwich will perform six original dance works at View on Friday, October 14 at 7 p.m.

The Phoenix Project Dance Company, in its seventh season, is operated through the Amber Perkins School of Dance of Norwich. The dance school, which has been in operation for 14 years, is run by sister and brother team Amber and Mike Perkins.

Both dancers, they create the choreography, which Mike said is based on modern dance, for the Phoenix Project Dance Company.

“The Company came about because we have a large school and a lot of our dancers would go on to perform professionally in all of the major companies in New York.

My sister said, ‘Why should we train our dancers to go on to perform in New York when we can have our own company right here?’” Mike said.

The Roland Christy Cup Golf Tournament was held Sunday, September 25 at the Thendara Golf Club under sunny skies.

New Jail: So many facts county legislators don’t have or don’t know

To the Editor:

One of the hotbed issues of the November election in Herkimer County is the new County Jail. This has been a long, slow and very expensive process. The problem is the Legislators don’t know if they are going to have sewers or a sewer plant or a septic system. Continue reading

Bigfoot in Adirondacks: Expedition nets some quality footprint castings

Dear Weekly Adirondack Editors:

On September 20 a “Bigfoot Research Expedition” took place, which I can only explain as “extraordinary” in the North Lake area, Town of Ohio, South Western Adirondack Region! Steve Kulls, leader of the North East Sasquatch Research Organization and Frank Siecienski, world-renowned Bigfoot researcher as well as members of the F and J Bigfoot Research Team from New York State and Vermont were in the remote area doing research.

Members of the research team found seven Bigfoot tracks. All were 14 inches long with five toes, a rounded heel, and an arched foot. Also found were tree formations and possible ground nesting areas from a Bigfoot.

While the research was going on, all the evidence was being recorded for television stations to be televised on September 21 across the United States and on Steve Kulls’ sasquatchdetective.com Bigfoot Internet talk show every Sunday night. I did many of the television segments on Bigfoot in the Adirondacks. Enclosed is a photo of two Bigfoot castings from the Adirondacks found by two of the top Bigfoot researchers in the United States, Frank Siecienski and Steve Kulls. Thank you very much!
