The rainy day on Sunday, August 31 may have sent some visitors home earlier, but it did not deter the 2850-plus ducks that made their annual migration down the Moose River at the 4th annual CAPPY Duck Derby.
The event was a success, mostly due to all the volunteers who pitched in to make it work.
CAP-21 would like to express its appreciation to our wonderful duck volunteers, particularly Tim and Patty Foley, Sandy Booton, Mike Farmer and Martha Denio; to Ed Booton and Mike Cunningham for their finish line work with the CAPPY Duck Plucker; to the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary, the Town of Webb Highway Department for their Duck Dumper, the Town of Webb Police Department; the Amy Lynn Duo for the inspirational duck music, and to all the CAPPY Round Up Kids who pitched in to corral the little runaways.
Although once again we did not have a $100,000 winner, we did have a great consolation prize courtesy of the Town of Webb Information Office.
The Billy Joel Madison Square Garden concert tickets went to Heather Caufield of Old Forge.
The remaining prizes went to:
Grand prize of $1,000 donated by Adirondack Bank and Enchanted Forest Water Safari – #671 Tracey Hines of Arvada, CO; second prize – Dagger Zydeco 9.0 kayak donated by Mountainman Outdoor Supply Co.,#1602 Connie Mann of Corinth, NY; third prize – stained glass window donated by Meyda Tiffany, #925 Penny Smedley of Old Forge.

Basically, the prize winners were a nice mix of locals, seasonal and visitors. It should be noted that the first duck sold was an on-line purchase by Diane and Tom Hartney who won the Old Forge Hardware Gift Basket.
The Hartneys have been big supporters of the summer and seasonal hanging basket program administered by CAP-21.
So the racing tip is this: get your ducks early and on-line next year.
It should be noted that Duck #1319 was found upstream at Bald Mountain Pond. Oh, the mysteries of that CAPPY Duck. See you next racing season. Quack, Quack.
