School board invites public for Pre-K talk

The Town of Webb School Board of Education encourages the public to attend its next meeting on Tuesday, January 17 at 6:30 p.m. as it will be gathering comments from the community regarding a Pre- Kindergarten program.

All are invited to share their comments and ideas with the board.

The meeting will be held in the school library.

Webb fifth graders conduct Humane Society fundraiser

The fifth grade class at the Town of Webb School has begun its annual fundraiser to benefit the Herkimer County Humane Society of Mohawk.

The students’ goal this year is to raise $700 which will be used to support the cost of spaying and neutering dogs and cats available for adoption.

Anyone who would like to assist with the students’ goal can send a check payable to The Herkimer County Humane Society to: Anne Phinney, c/o Town of Webb School, P.O. Box 38, Old Forge, NY 13420.

“The shelter’s needs are endless and we hope to alleviate some of the burden. If you are considering a pet for your family this holiday season, please consider adopting from one of the many shelters in the Central New York area,” said Mrs. Phinney.

School to host Holiday Concerts, Dec. 15 & 16

The Town of Webb School UFSD Vocal Music Department will present its annual holiday choral concerts on Thursday and Friday, December 15 and 16.

The Senior and Junior Choirs will perform on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the school gymnasium. Continue reading

Helen Estabrook: Tree dedicated to former Webb teacher

Helen Estabrook is a much honored and well known member of the Old Forge community. She is a retired teacher from the Town of Webb School and was a dedicated member of the school’s Board of Education for 13 years.

In front of the school is a new sign, and to its left is a newly planted small tree which honors Mrs. Estabrook for all her years of service to our school.

Most of you familiar with Mrs. Estabrook, know her for the wonderful teacher she was.

But outside of her career at school she has led a very interesting life in our community. Continue reading

Boys varsity team rises to post season challenge

It’s been a historic week for the Old Forge Boys Varsity Soccer squad and, while the results weren’t thoroughly positive, hindsight will undoubtedly prove that there’s little to complain about.

It’s kind of like the old joke that starts out with a doctor telling his patient that he’s got some good news and some bad news, then asking which one he should deliver first.

Invariably, the answer is, “Gimme’ the good news.” Of course, the bad news always negates the good, leading to a hearty chuckle for all.

Well, Sectional games are no laughing matter and, in this case, the “bummer” part isn’t really so horrible, while the uplifting part is truly over the top.

So, let’s get the not-so-much-fun element out of the way, and save the best for last.

On Tuesday, November 8, the guys boarded a bus headed for Sauquoit to take on the mighty Hamilton Emerald Knights for the Section III Class D Championship.

That’s the same team that had defeated Old Forge twice during the regular season, by scores of 3-0 and 3-1.

They’re also a team that has been State-ranked all season.

And, finally, they’re the same team that has played in New York State’s Final Four the last three seasons. Pretty heady stuff. Continue reading

Maddie Phaneuf to compete in state cross country race Saturday, Nov. 12

Maddie Phaneuf, a member of the Town of Webb School Cross Country team, took a third place finish at the Class D Section III Cross Country Sectionals at Jamesville Beach on Saturday, November 5.

She will compete with runners representing Class D schools from across New York state at the State Cross Country Meet at VVS on Saturday, November 12.

The race begins at 12:30 p.m.

Varsity Soccer Playoff Action

Webb boys defeat Brookfield, advance to Saturday finals

The Town of Webb School’s second seeded Boys Varsity soccer team defeated third seed, Brookfield, in the Class D-2 Sectional semi- finals on Wednesday, November 2 at Sauquoit with a score of 2–0.

The first goal of the game was scored in the third quarter by Webb’s Kevin Kress and was followed by a second unassisted goal by Connor Rockhill minutes later.

Following the win, the Webb team will face fourth seeded Remsen in the Sectional Finals on Saturday, November 5 at 5:30 p.m. at Lowville High School.

The new artificial turf field is located directly behind the high school.
