Inlet Historical Society sets cleaning day

The Inlet Historical Society is planning a spring cleaning day for Saturday, May 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Historical members are seeking assistance with applying polyurethane treatments to the new window seats, cleaning and sorting of the first floor museum space, moving  items to the upstairs, and installation of lighting on the second floor.

Help is also needed for light yard work and planting.

Anyone who would like to help get the building ready for the summer season is welcome.

Inlet Historical Society says thank you for 2014 support

The Inlet Historical Society, a Section 501 (c)(3) charitable organization, wishes to thank all new and renewing members, as well as others, who have contributed to the Society’s efforts in preserving and presenting the history of the Town of Inlet and the surrounding region.

Last year, the Society decided to convert the membership year to a calendar year, so individuals who wish to become members, or to renew their membeship for 2014, can still do so for the current year.

You may obtain the membership form at the Town Hall or at www.inlethistoricalsociety.org .

Below, we have listed all who have already responded generously and hope readers will consider joining your friends and neighbors listed below in supporting our efforts to protect and tell about the history of the full and part time families of Inlet. Continue reading

Inlet Historical Society receives donation of Holl’s Inn plates

The Inlet Historical Society has acquired a collection of wedding plates that once hung on the walls of the tavern area of the Holl’s Inn through a donation by Victor Holl.

From the early 1930’s, the owners of Holl’s Inn had a tradition of adorning the walls with commemorative plates inscribed with the date and names of those who held their  weddings or anniversaries at the establishment.

Old Hunting Camps subject of Inlet Historical lecture

The Inlet Historical Society will present a power point lecture on Old Hunting Camps In the Inlet Area on Wednesday, September 18 at 7 p.m at the Inlet Town Hall Meeting Room.

Narrative journals along with old photos collected by society member Mitch Lee be used to illustrate the days of hunting camps from the 1880’s to the 1950’s.

The program is free of charge and open to the public. Tickets for a kayak raffle to benefit the Inlet Historical Association will be available for purchase.

Inlet program to highlight past & present life in Inlet, July 24

The Inlet Historical Society will present a continuation of its “Inlet Then and Now” program on Wednesday, July 24 at 7 p.m.

Charles Herr, who presented the the first part of the program in June, will continue his discussion of the development of the early Village of Inlet.

He will also discuss the churches, fire department and other hotels and businesses at the head of Fourth Lake and the surrounding Seventh and Limekiln Lakes. Continue reading

Inlet Historical Society to present first summer talk

The Inlet Historical Society will present its first program of the summer, “Before There Was Inlet, Part One,” at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 26, in the Inlet Town Hall at Arrowhead Park in Inlet.

Charles Herr will discuss the lives, plans and hopes of the owners of the Inlet’s land before settlers, transportation, and civic needs resulted in the town’s separation from Morehouse in 1902.

The territory’s owners included the original namesake of Sagamore Lake, a founder of Port Leyden and a famous mathematician who traveled the Adirondacks for twenty years beginning in the 1830’s and who once owned all of Raquette Lake.   Continue reading
