140 golfers help raise $6,000 in Kyle Riedman Memorial Tournament

Over 140 people came out to the Inlet Golf Course on Saturday, June 14th, to play in the Kyle Riedman Memorial Golf Tournment, as a way to pay tribute to a young man that was much respected in the community, and to raise charitable funds in his name.

The tournament raised over $6,000 for the Kyle Riedman Memorial Scholarship Fund through registration fees and donation support from local businesses.

Players of all ages and skill levels competed in a lighthearted round of golf for first, second, and last place prizes.  Continue reading →

Old Forge Legion hosts families for 5th Wounded Warriors Weekend

Old Forge Legion Post #893 hosted four military families stationed at Fort Drum for a Wounded Warriors Weekend on June 20, 21 and 22nd.

The weekend was supported by a year-long, fund-raising effort through the legion’s Wounded Warrior Project, which provides an expense-free stay in Old Forge for soldiers injured in the line of duty and their families. This is the Legion’s fifth year of hosting the event. Continue reading →

Thank you CAP-21 and View for hosting a political Forum of our Congres-sional District candidates. I was not looking forward to hearing the “political jargon” of the well-funded PACs and outside interests.

However, I found two interesting candidates, Aaron Woolf and Matt Funiciello, and was provoked into doing some serious thinking about our choices and what direction I would like to see our representative take. Continue reading →

Old wooden boats bring seasonal character to Limekiln Lake

It was the last week of June in 1977. For a twelve-year-old boy living on Limekiln Lake, it meant no more school! It also meant no more bugs. But best of all, it meant splashing boats of all shapes and sizes into the waiting waters of the lake.

These boats had begun passing by our house, cars towing them on trailers.

Every one of these crafts was destined for a boathouse, dock, or mooring buoy. Continue reading →

Storms slice through region; graduation time for grandson Jacob

There was some adventurous weather this week, as a Class One tornado touched ground for about ten miles near Verona.

The twister took down many trees and power lines, but didn’t do much damage to homes as it tore through forest mostly.

The Town of Webb School Class of 1964 held its 50th reunion

The Town of Webb School Class of 1964 held its 50th reunion in Old Forge on Friday and Saturday, June 20 and 21 with 16 of the original 28 alumni in attendance.

The weekend included a Friday tour of the school building, dinner at Van Auken’s Inne on Saturday, and an impromptu light breakfast on Sunday at the home of alumnus Dave Barker and his wife, Marcia.

“Our tour of the school was definitely a highlight of our reunion as many of the folks who came from as far away as New Zealand, Missouri, Texas and Pennsylvania had not been back in the Town of Webb School for nearly 50 years,” said alumnus Liette Dennis.

In attendance were Linda Gokey Burdick, Shirley Turner Stomierowski, Lyn Villiere Kinney, Dawn Rivett Corrigan, Liette Dennis, Susan Beckingham Riggs, Nancy Danaher-Light, Lynda Payne Levi, Donna Peters, David Barker, Patricia Stone Smith, Donnie Russell, Mary Roberts Hogan, Sue Ann Lorenz-Wallace, Terry Deis Lehnen and Bonnie Delmarsh.

Classmates that were unable to attend included Pam Eldridge Hameline, Susan Schuyler Hartford, Bonnie Ritz Friesen, Terry Aldrich, Leroy Schmuck and Peter Hansen.

Six students from the class have passed away: Raymond Sponable, Michael Burke, Mark Gebhardt, Norman Ellis, Richard Fulton and Edward Giroux.
