Letter to the Editor Fed up with the horrible condition of Route 28 north? Sound off to officials!

Dear Editor: 

If you live on Route 28 or travel to and from Old Forge to Inlet, you too must be appalled by the road conditions.

Trying to avoid the holes and huge spaces where the asphalt is missing is a challenge and dangerous.

Since the snow went out, I have been driving the road at 30 MPH or lower.   Continue reading

Encore performance depicts l00 years of Old Forge Library, June 10th

As part of the Old Forge  Library’s year-long Centennial Celebration, the reader’s theater production of One Hundred Years and Counting: Channeling the Past Straight into the Present, which was first performed at the library on December 4 to a packed house, will have a repeat performance on Tuesday June 10 at 7 p.m.

The play, which chronicles the library’s beginning to the present day, was written by Paula Alida Roy.

Directed by Alan Saban, it starts out in the present with North Country Public Radio Reporter Ellen Rocco—played by Mary Ann Nelson—interviewing Library Director Isabella Worthen about the library’s history.

Ms. Gaudin’s Piano Recital set June 12th

Piano students of Ms. Valerie Gaudin will present their annual Spring Piano Recital on Thursday, June 12th  at 7:00 p.m. at Niccolls Memorial Church.

Enjoy music performed by: Alexandria Aliasso, Fern Bailey, Chloe Barkauskas, Allyson Brosemer, Chloe Brosemer,  Megan DeFilipps, Clifford Donovan, Alexis Hollister, Alivia Hopsicker, Holly Kalil, Morgan Payne, Olivia Phaneuf and Jack Rivet.

Refreshments will be served immediately following the performance. The recital is open to the public.

Town of Webb Board of Education holds meeting on June 3rd

The Town of Webb UFSD Board of Education held a meeting on Tuesday, June 3 at 6:30 p.m., where it took the actions summarized as follows (not official minutes).

Approved the Minutes of May 21, 2014 meeting.

Approved the Warrants and Claims.

Approved the Committee on Special Education Recom-mendations.

Approved the Board of Education Meeting Calendar for 2014-2015 school year.

Approved David Leach as Athletic Director for 2014-2015

Accepted the Agreement with Catholic Charities for substance abuse counseling for the 2014-2015 school year.

Approved the Education Course Credit Requests as submitted by Robert Fountain. Continue reading

Memorial Day thanks from Inlet

The American Legion Post 1402 and the Town of Inlet would like to thank everyone who participated in the 2014 Hamilton County Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony. SAM_0622

The weather was great for the one-mile march from the Inlet Volunteer Emergency Services building to Arrowhead Park.

The Inlet Youth Commission handed out red, white and blue helium balloons to the spectators lining the street downtown and made sure those who marched had water to drink. Continue reading

Services held for Elizabeth A. Stem, 96

Elizabeth A. Stem, 96, of Old Forge passed away June 1, 2014 at the Presbyterian Home for Central New York in New Hartford, where she had been a resident since last year.Stem photo

Betty was born on July 4, 1917 in Henrietta, NY, a daughter of Elmer and Catherine Muhs.

She married Carl Emmerling in 1941, and following his death, married Edgar Stem in 1989.

Betty worked for several years at Kodak Corporation in Rochester, eventually retiring in 1979. She was a respected member of the Old Forge community for almost 60 years.  Continue reading

David Francis Peterson, Sr., 70, passes away

David Francis Peterson, Sr., 70, of Lone Pine Road North, formerly of Boon-ville, husband of Betty, passed away at his residence, while under the loving care of his son, Dave, Jr. Hospice and Palliative Care, Heidi Von Matt, and a friend, Cindy, on Saturday May 31, 2014.

He was born in Little Falls, on October 13, 1943. Dave graduated from Little Falls High School, with the Class of 1960. PETERSON DAVID F. SR.

Afterwards, Mr. Peterson served his country in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany and serving four tours in Viet Nam during the Viet Nam War. He was honorably discharged in 1969, and settled in the Carthage area. In 1970 Dave was united in marriage with Betty Smith, a union that endured for 43 years.   Continue reading
