The variance: A legal proceeding that benefits from applicant’s preparation

What is a Variance? Simply put, a variance, if granted, allows something to happen that is otherwise prohibited by the Zoning Ordinance.

Everyone has the right to apply for a variance from the Zoning Board of Appeals. Note the key word in the Board’s title… “Appeals.”

Technically, the applicant is making an appeal to this particular board to overturn an action by the Code Enforcement Officer, which is usually the denial of a building permit.

The Code Officer only has the ability to issue building permits if the proposed work meets the minimum requirements of the Town’s Zoning Ordinance.

Pictures turn to stories when a boy enters third grade

I have reflected on the time period when I first began to write stories for my own personal enjoyment. I wrote many picture books in first and second grade, and was forced to write essays as assignments in third and fourth grade.

I would not describe any of that material as award-winning. They were just exercises to amuse myself or my teacher, as most were funny in nature.

But at the age of nine, while sitting in my bedroom on a late fall afternoon, I found my first real voice as a writer.

A short story just started to pour out on paper as I scribbled down my thoughts, emotions, and perceptions. I called it a November story.

Jason Landl graduates with military honors

Airman Jason Michael Landl graduated with honors from Basic Military Training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX on Friday, October 18, 2013. On Thursday, October 17, he received his official Airman Coin in recognition of his transition from civilian trainee to “Airman.”

At a special coin ceremony, Jason received the “Honor Coin” which signified his placement in the top 10 percent of the graduating class of over 630 Airmen, in both his academic and physical test scores.

For the next 13 weeks, he will remain at Lackland AFB and receive Technical Training before moving on to his career goals in the United States Air Force.

Ten Webb students inducted to National Honor Society

Ten students from the Town of Webb High School were inducted as new members of the Hadarondah Chapter of the National Honor Society in a ceremony held at the school on Tuesday, October 29th.

Kids’ Fishing Derby a fun part of annual Adirondack Kids Day

With a day full of fun for kids from near and far—Adirondack Kids Day in Inlet hosted its 2nd Annual Kid’s Fishing Derby on Saturday, October 5th. Forty-one children—22 girls and 19 boys—showed up for the event with fishing on their minds.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the kids were boated out to a lucky fishing spot on Fourth Lake. Secret lures, floating bobbers, winning worms and the zing of a successful cast were drowned out by participants’ vocal enthusiasm, also known as squeals of pleasure.

Woodgate Harvest Supper set Saturday, November 2

A Roast Pork Harvest Supper will be held Saturday, November 2 at the White Otter Fish and Game Club on Woodgate Rd. in Woodgate.

Serving will begin at 4:30 p.m. and will continue until approximately 7:30 p.m.

The cost is $10 for adults, $7 for children ages six to 12, and free for kids ages five and under.

Proceeds from the supper will support White Otter Fish and Game Club activities including youth sponsorship to DEC summer camp and improvements to the club shooting range.

New CTS vehicle made possible by combined community efforts

Several area organizations have collaborated to assist Community Transportation Services (CTS) with getting their new vehicle into service this month.

When it became apparent that the 2005 CTS passenger van was coming to the end of its use, CAP-21 was able to obtain a $14,000 grant through The Community Foundation of Herkimer & Oneida Counties, Inc.
