Daylight savings time cuts after school activities short

It seemed like the fall of 1976 had sprung from nowhere. The air had a good bite to it, and it seemed as if the colors had busted out overnight.

Outdoor after-school activities were shortened as the daylight hours faded away.

My time outside was so limited that it felt like an eternity before I could watch my favorite television show, Black Sheep Squadron.

Those two hours from dusk to prime time television viewing had to be filled in some way by this impatient 11-year-old.

I longed for just a few short moments more to hunt around the lake, or maybe just wet a line from one of the old quiet boathouses. Continue reading

Myth Buster: A cricket in the house not so lucky after all

Here we are at that special time of year again when all of God’s creatures decide that after spending their entire lives outdoors they now want to live inside with us. It seems the critters vary year by year, and this year’s biggest offender appears to be, of all things, crickets and grasshoppers.

So it starts—Critter Warfare. Why so many? Why are they all here at once? In my search for answers, I, like any good American, googled the issue. Unfortunately there were no answers but plenty of “purchase my product” solutions.

So back to these crickets. I’ve always enjoyed listening to them at night and have actually found them to be quite comforting. In the house—not so much. They’re soooooo loud, coupled with the ability to land and cling, that the whole cricket thing is totally ruined for me. Continue reading

Rejuvenated Ad’k lake gets first stocking in 30 years

The colors are getting to their peak in most parts of the Adirondacks. While flying over the southern part of the park last Friday the reds were brilliant by old beaver ponds and small bodies of water.

They were duller at higher elevations but there were some bright spots with still a lot of green in the birches and beeches.

The wind and rain over the weekend didn’t knock down or blow off too many of them.

The weather report this week appears to be very nice so there will still be a chance to catch some nice color on the landscape this weekend.
