Friends of the Old Forge Library grateful to meet fundraising goal for book sale

The Friends of the Old Forge Library can attest to some advantages of living in the Old Forge area. Remember the excitement of driving door-to-door looking for treasures during the recent village-wide garage sale days?

It was cold and rainy but still the shoppers shopped and they stopped at the book sale at the Old Forge Library.

The Friends sponsored an early sale this year to raise matching funds for a Libri Foundation grant.

The Libri Foundation specifically targets rural libraries at least 30 miles from a city and serving a population less than five thousand.

The Libri Foundation donates, through its Books for Children Program, good quality hard cover books.

To demonstrate community support there must be a match of at least $350 to receive about $1,050 worth of children’s books.

The sale of used books during the village-wide sales accomplished that.

Library Director Isabella Worthen recently received word that the grant was awarded and she can now review the list of books available to order for the Old Forge Children’s section of our library.

The Friends of the Old Forge Library thank all of you who stopped by to purchase books and to those who volunteered to make this a successful event.

We will soon have many new books for the children to use as a result of our community support.

Talkin’ Code with Andrew Getty

Why all the fuss, it’s only a shed?!

Shed Rules

The customer has an expectation that what they are paying for meets certain minimum standards. This is a fundamental concept of business.

As this concept applies to buildings, the customer is all too often more focused on what the building will look like, how it functions, does it provide the space they anticipate rather than be concerned about some code standard.

Even little buildings like storage sheds or a gazebo are expected to meet some very basic standards.

VIEW: Acoustic duo Mike + Ruthy to perform on Saturday, July 13th

Acoustic musical duo, Mike + Ruthy, will be performing a mix of folk, Americana, blues, and indie rock at View on Saturday, July 13 at 7:30 p.m.

The husband and wife team of Michael Merenda and Ruth Ungar, first began playing music together in New York City in 1999 and are currently residents of Woodstock, NY.

While they have never been to Old Forge, they said they are looking forward to presenting a concert at View.

“Something I like about our life and career is that we play a lot of really beautiful tucked away towns and venues where you don’t expect to actually grow a following, or your career. But actually, you do because there is a more laid back energy and sense of community in those places and people come out and really cut loose and have a good time,” Ungar said.

She said the music she and Merenda perform can be classified as “listening music”—full of interesting lyrics, high and low tempos with a fiddle or a banjo thrown in.

Over the years they have produced four albums, The Honeymoon Agenda, which was written on their honeymoon, Waltz of the Chickadee, Million to One, and The NYC EP which includes a never before recorded song written by Woody Guthrie called, “My New York City.”

Tickets to the Mike + Ruthy show are $25 for non-members and $20 for members and may be purchased from View by calling (315) 369-6411 or by going online to viewarts.org.
