The Town of Webb UFSD Board of Education met on Tuesday, July 2, where it swore in new members and officers, and conducted reorganizational matters and regular business. This is not a complete summary and does not represent approved minutes, which can be found at www.towschool.org, once approved.

• Oath of Allegiance for elected Board Member, Maryellen Denio- 5 year term

• Election of President, Kathleen Nahor and Vice President, Joseph Phaneuf

• Oath of Allegiance for President and Vice-President

The Board of Education took the following action:

Principal’s Report:

* I would like to remind everyone of the reading challenge for grades K-5 this summer from the Webb Way. Every student who reads 3 books can turn in a certificate to the main office to receive a coupon for an ice cream cone at A Sweet Car Named Desire.

* Thank you to Dave Leach, Jess Brownsell and Nate Smith for organizing and supervising the K-5 Field Day during the morning of Wednesday, 6/19. The K-5 students thoroughly enjoyed all the activities. It was a great end of the year celebration activity for students in grades K-5.

* Congratulations to the Class of 2013 on their graduation from the Town of Webb UFSD.

* The Finals/Regents/SLO testing finished very smoothly with the cooperation of teachers/staff proctoring and scoring.

* Congratulations to Emily Stuart on becoming the successful candidate for our Instrumental Music Teacher. We look forward to a great year ahead with Emily. Thank you to everyone who applied. It was a very competitive pool of candidates.

* Students did very well on many of the Regents exams.

Superintendent’s Report included the topics:

* Welcome to the Board of Education Maryellen Denio. We appreciate your willingness to serve our students.

* Congratulations to Ms. Emily Stuart. We look forward to seeing (and hearing) all that she will accomplish with our students in her new position as the Instrumental Music Teacher.

* Lesley Leach will be taking a break this summer from the Fitness Center mornings. Janine Phaneuf will be covering as her sub.

* Summer school will begin next week for our elementary students that were invited. Madeline Fenton will be instructing them for the next month in that capacity.

* Projects: Many of the proposed items are maintenance projects and have been identified in the building condition reports submitted to the State previously. Several are relative needs and one is an idea to further enhance use of the facility and add another level of safety and security in the process.

* Concrete walkway repair – Post office side entrance and the new main entrance off the bus circle. This will include removal of old concrete and replacement. The new main entrance will be regraded to eliminate the standing water at the entrance as well as remove the old rails. A new rear gym entrance will also be constructed to allow a wider concrete entry to allow for easier access and snow removal.

* Pavement- Paving will happen at the new main entrance to help regrade the area and tie into the new walkway. The area around the generator will be paved where the shed used to be and where drainage is now functioning poorly due to the surrounding dirt.

* Paved area for track practice to include areas for practice of long jump, high jump, limited runs of hurdles, discus and shot. These areas will be paved surfaces next to the storage building that was constructed a couple of years ago and will have the proper mats rolled out or placed when needed. A cage will also be installed to contain the discus. This would allow our track athletes to actually have a practice area prior to going to competition.

* Move Fitness Center- We are looking to move the fitness center from its current location to the front of the building where the new main entrance is located. This would allow us to put an entry door in between the two doors that are already there (the double locked entry). Community members would enter into the fitness center without actually entering into the locked main portion of the building. We would also increase the available space by removing the majority of the current wall between classrooms and increasing the space of the fitness center to around 1.5 times the space that it currently has. It is currently overcrowded to say the least. We would have to hire out some of the work but some could be done in house. The classrooms would then shift appropriately down the hall.

* Air Conditioning- Currently we can no longer install the window units we have used in the main office, Principal’s office and fitness center due to the damage that has been caused to the aluminum frames during the repeated removal and replacement of windows over the last few years. We need to install air in these year round spaces for those that work in or use the facility during the summer months.

* The above items are planned to be done using monies we encumbered in last year’s budget. There is no additional impact or cost to the taxpayer.

* Seating, length of program and heat in the gymnasium at graduation were open for discussion and comment.

The next meeting will be held on August 13, 2013 at 6:30 p.m.
