Meet the authors of new Adirondack books at Old Forge Hardware, July 6

Two authors will sign copies of their latest Adirondack-themed books at Old Forge Hardware on Saturday, July 6, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Phil Brown, editor of the Adirondack Explorer newsmagazine, will be signing his new guidebook, Adirondack Paddling: 60 Great Flatwater Adventures, while Michael Virtanen will be signing his new suspense novel, The River’s Tale. Both books were published by Lost Pond Press.

Adirondack Paddling describes 60 flatwater paddling trips throughout the Adirondack Park, including several in the Old Forge region.

It contains more than 100 color photos of landscapes and wildlife and color maps of every route and is co-published by the Adirondack Mountain Club.

The River’s Tale is a prequel to Virtanen’s first novel, Within a Forest Dark, which won the Adirondack Center for Writing’s award for best fiction in 2007.

The protagonist of the new novel, Alison Reade, flees to a remote cabin in the Adirondacks to escape an ex-boyfriend who is stalking her.

She lands a job as a Hudson River rafting guide and starts to fall in love with her charismatic boss.

Life is good—until she discovers the Adirondacks are not the safe haven she thought they were.

Turner Camps enters its 100th year

Rev. Dr. Carrol and Joyce Turner, owners of the Turner Camps, provided the following historic information in celebration of the camp’s 100th season of operation on Fourth Lake.

Carved out of the woods and reclaimed from undeveloped land, Turner Camps continue to offer premium vacation housekeeping cottages to families from all over the country. For one hundred years, the traditions and facilities initiated by Alexander and Ina Turner in 1914 are still maintained and operated by the same family, which makes Turner Camps the oldest continuously family-run housekeeping cottage colony on these lakes.

In the beginning, Al and Ina operated a boardinghouse, which was on the property when they purchased it. Over the years, Al used his carpentry skills to build additional cottages, sometimes combining old outbuildings with new construction to create a new lodge. Hunters, trappers, fishermen, and the random tourist frequented the Camps in the early days, prior to the construction of a good road.  Continue reading

Nourished Living by Dietician Kelly Hamlin MA, RD, CDN

The Old Forge Farmers’ Market opened for the season last Friday, and we all know what yummy fruits and veggies we can find there.

But, show of hands, who is tired of preparing them the same ol’, same ol’ way?

I know I do.

So how about some ideas on preparing and grilling those farm fresh veggies?

First of all, keep in mind that extra crunchy vegetables such as broccoli and carrots should be blanched prior to grilling.

Blanching is a cooking technique in which food is briefly immersed in boiling water or fat in order to enhance their natural color.

Blanched vegetables are typically plunged into an ice water bath afterward to halt the cooking process.

After about a minute, drain them and blot dry with a paper towel.

Broccoli. Personally, I don’t care much for the big stems, but they work great for grilling purposes.  Continue reading
