Note of Thanks

We would like to extend our gratitude for all expressions of sympathy with the passing of our mother/grandmother, Mary Louise Socash in our home on March 12, 2013.

Our family holds a special place in our hearts for Danielle Beckingham, R.N. of Hospice, Linda Hippisley and Arlene Peabody of HASCA, and MaryBeth Pisani, neighbor extraordinaire, for their much appreciated compassionate care and assistance. We were once again reminded of the wonderful community we live in and feel blessed to call Old Forge home.

With love and appreciation,

Tom & Pam Socash and Family,

Old Forge

Growing up Adirondack by Mitch Lee

Hopping from one seasonal adventure to another with spring’s return

It was late April of 1975 and I was anxiously waiting for the ice to go out on the lake. I was anticipating the opportunity to drop a bobber off the Foster’s dock and enjoy my first real open water fishing of the season.

I decided to make my way through the woods to the lake to check on the ice situation.

It would have been easier for me to take a more direct path on the road, but I found it to be more fun and challenging to hike in the woods.

Scraps of snow were scattered throughout the forest floor and I tested myself by traveling strictly on top of them.

I used a five-foot-long stick to help vault myself from the patches placed too far apart for me to hop only by the power of my Converse sneakers.

I found a good-sized zigzagging scrap of snow to start with that led me pretty far into the woods.

I crunched along seeking other snowy remains that appeared like small white islands amidst the sea of forest floor. Continue reading

Talkin’ Code with Andrew Getty

Don’t use the school as a guide to building permit requirements

Schools & the code office

Every now and then we will get a question regarding something concerning one of the school buildings in the Town of Webb.

The answer usually draws the same response, one of surprise.

The Code Office does NOT have any jurisdiction anywhere on school property.

This is the same throughout the state, the local Code Enforcement Office does not have jurisdiction on any public school property.

However, this office is involved with the school’s mandatory annual fire safety inspections required by the NYS Department of Education [DOE].

Although our involvement is not mandatory by law; it is a cooperative arrangement between this office and the school.

The school must comply with the annual inspection requirements of the DOE and whoever the inspectors are must be qualified to do the inspection.

The qualifications for the inspector are set by the DOE, which include certified Code Enforcement Officers.

Code Enforcement Officers must be trained by the NYS Department of State [DOS] and will only become certified after the passing of the state exam.

To maintain their certification, they must acquire the mandatory annual continued education courses offered, again by DOS, every year. Continue reading

Just Call me Mrs. Lucky by Jan from Woodgate

Driving Miss Crazy…

In all my years of operating a motor vehicle I’ve been ticketed but once and in my defense, I was young and stupid. Now that I’m old and oh so much wiser I find it incredibly beneficial to simply obey the rules of the road hence saving me tons of cashola on fines and penalties.

Of course, daughter Jamie will beg to differ. She blatantly makes mad fun of my driving, and it’s just about to the point where she will refuse to be a passenger in any vehicle if I’m behind the wheel. So unfair.

Just because I come to a halt when I feel threatened (tailgater, big truck, lost in Utica, etc.) is no reason to be cruel. Needless to say, I no longer drive when we’re together.

Talk about karma…I vividly remember totally losing control when teaching this kid about road safety. She was a horrible driver and I wasn’t shy about criticism and now, all these years later, I’ve been shamed into passenger status.

And I like it. Continue reading

Gary Lee’s Daybreak to Twilight

Thank you, Mom, for sharing love of outdoors and photography

White pelicans, a spoonbill and several willets

White pelicans, a spoonbill and several willets

Just came in from outside and it was 83 degrees and clear. So far this week we have had only a few sprinkles, and certainly no snow. It has been in the low seventies each morning and up in the eighties during the day.

There were some t-storms over Fort Myers one evening and a beautiful rainbow. The Sanibel River has some water in it this year. Last year it was dry.

On a sad note, my mother Doris Edna Lee, age 92, passed away this week after suffering from Alzheimer’s for several years.

She passed many of her hobbies onto me over the years. She had her nice Kodak camera ready for events and happenings outside the home.

Her flower gardens were always full of flowers and her bird feeders were always full of seed. Continue reading
