Talkin’ Code with Andrew Getty

Amazing! The things we never knew about ‘S’ traps, et cetera

DID YOU KNOW?

Different people have different assumptions of many things. When it comes to building codes, local zoning requirements or the Adirondack Park Agency [APA] there is no lack of assumptions.

Things that some people thought they knew all along for whatever reason just may not be so. Did you know….the use or installation of drywells for septic systems has been all but prohibited since 1972? That’s right, 1972.

Appendix 75-A, the regulating rule adopted by the NYS Health department as minimum standards for individual wastewater treatment systems [residential septic systems] was first adopted in 1972. Although there is a whole section dedicated to seepage pits, the first paragraph starts out with “if soil and site conditions are adequate for absorption trenches, seepage pits shall not be used.”

For many, many years the idea of digging a big hole, set a drywell tank, put some stone around it was common. It was inexpensive, took least space and was fast. Probably 99 out of 100 installed should have had a standard absorption field. Continue reading

Just a Thought by Richard Risley

Where would we be without those who make us what we are?

In picking up with last week’s topic… someone, somewhere is opining: “Why do I care if the school system dies off? I don’t have kids. Hey maybe my school taxes will go down!”

But when you follow the thought trail to its conclusion, you realize a balanced community is necessary if we are to have any community at all, and that includes a solid sector of year-round families.

Otherwise, when you call for help in a fire or medical emergency, who will respond?

It won’t be the carpenter, plumber or janitor that commutes to work each day in Old Forge.

They won’t be rising in the middle of the night to get dressed and drive 30 or 50 miles to spray water on your house… or transport you to a Utica hospital. Even if they did, how long would you be able to wait?

Our Fire and EMS responders are local volunteers, many working class, some young retirees, who are actually part of this community they serve.

Who will take their place in a few years?  Continue reading

Growing up Adirondack by Mitch Lee

Walking along frozen creek bed, losing yourself in thought

My dog Mutt rubbed her head against my knees and let out a low groaning whimper—familiar indicators that she was in the mood to venture outside for a hike.

Always ready to comply with a request for an adventure, I suited up in my winter gear and we headed outside.

I decided it would be a good day for us to take a hike up the creek behind our house to see what we could see.

I made a beeline for the small trail that led through large glacier- cut stone behind our garage. Continue reading

Hand washing: Effective in preventing spread of germs, disease

by Dr. Adam Seigers, Medical Health Contributor

Keeping hands clean is without a doubt the most important way to prevent the spread of germs and disease.

It is especially important during the cold and flu seasons.

Hands should be washed before preparing or eating food, after using the rest room, blowing the nose, coughing, or sneezing.

They should even be washed after touching an animal or pet.

Proper hand washing technique consists of wetting the hands with warm or cold water.

The temperature of the water is for comfort only since even warm water is too cool to kill bacteria. Continue reading
