Future of Adirondack Railroad topic of Boonville meeting, Nov. 20

The Adirondack Railroad Preservation Society (ARPS) and Iowa Pacific Holdings, LLC (IPH) announced a few weeks ago, their new partnership in the development of train service between Lake Placid and New York City.

Because this development will potentially provide tremendous opportunities for communities and stakeholders along the entire

Adirondack Rail corridor for growth in tourism, recreation and economic development, The Tug Hill Commission and Northern Oneida County Council of Governments will meet with representatives of the Adirondack Railroad Preservation Society (ARPS) on Tuesday, November 20 to discuss the future of the railroad.

The meeting is open to the public and will be held at the Boonville Municipal Building at 13149 State Route 12 at 5:30 p.m. ARPS President Bill Branson will provide an overview of the agreement with IPH and what it means for the future of the rail corridor.

Also in attendance will be representatives of the Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA), Oneida County and community leaders and stakeholders from communities in the NOCCOG region and beyond.

The agreement between ARPS and IPH provides a joint endeavor to develop a plan for service between NYC and Lake Placid for submission to NY DOT and other stakeholders.

Iowa Pacific Holdings will bear the cost and risk of operating the service and will contract with ARPS for operation of the trains on ARPS trackage.

Also, the parties will jointly explore other opportunities along the corridor to expand both tourism and other uses with input from interested parties along the line.

This meeting will present an opportunity for communities along the southern end of the Adirondack Railroad to learn more about the agreement and to provide input and ideas on how the future of the railroad will benefit the region’s economy.

Anyone interested in attending is asked to RSVP by calling the Tug Hill Commission at 1-888-785- 2380, (315) 785-2380 or 785-2570; or e-mail: tughill@tughill.org.
