Town of Webb senior Shelby McGill, 18, has lived in Inlet since her 6th grade year.
She had moved from Texas to Indian Lake when she was four years old.
She attended Indian Lake school before transferring to Inlet Common School, then to the Town of Webb for 7th grade.
“My grandparents bought a motel in Indian Lake, and I came up to visit and fell in love with the place,” she said.
Shelby will be attending Cazenovia College in the fall to study Illustration and Animation.
“Art has always been a huge part of my life—I really enjoy drawing,” she said.
To better prepare for college, she has been attending a Visual Communications class at Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES).
She has been a Skills USA member at BOCES for the past two years.
Her favorite class is Advanced Placement Biology.
“It’s a class I’m actually interested in, and Ms. Harmer is really cool,” she said.
Her favorite teacher was former band teacher, Mr. Clark.
Her other favorite teachers are Mr. Cunningham and Ms. Harmer.
“They’re just really awesome and fun to hang out with,” she said.
Shelby performed in the school play ‘Annie Get Your Gun’, last year.
Outside of school she plays guitar, piano, cello and some violin.
She also produces electronic music. “Mostly Dubstep and trap music,” she said.
She spends a lot of time at her boyfriend’s house on the weekends, where she’s able to draw and make music. She also designs and assembles various costumes.
“I sell [them] online, mostly for mascot use,” she said.
Shelby’s parents are Matt and Amanda Miller. They run Matt’s Draft House at Screamen Eagle in Inlet. Amanda is also a postal worker in the Webb area post offices.
Shelby has one little sister, Lorelei.
Her parents have influenced her the most in life, she said.
“They have been there to guide me; I look up to them when I don’t know what to do. I base my actions on what they would do,” she said.
Shelby has one cat, Chi, who she said she will miss a lot.
Her favorite memory was her first Spirit Week at the Webb school.
“I have never done anything like that before, and it was so awesome,” she said.
“When I was first offered to go to BOCES, my first visitation was probably another unforgettable event,” she said.
“I will miss my family a lot when I leave; also the accessibility of everything, and how close everyone and everything is, the familiarity of it,” she said.
Shelby said she is really looking forward to graduation.
“I am ready to go to college, ready to be educated in something I’m interested in… and I’m looking forward to having more independence,” she said.
“I want to mention to the younger classes to not be hesitant about attending BOCES. You won’t regret it,” she said.
