Tyler McGough, a senior at Town of Webb School, was awarded a $1,500 scholarship by the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) for ranking high in an essay contest sponsored by the organization.
In his essay, McGough, a junior firefighter with the Woodgate Volunteer Fire Department, described his memorable experience as an on-site volunteer during the historic November 2014 winter storm in Buffalo that paralyzed the area when over seven feet of snow dropped over a period of eight days.
McGough’s essay ranked sixth out of 83 submissions, the highest ranking in Oneida County since the inception of the contest.
In addition to the FASNY award, he received a $500 scholarship from the Central New York Firemen’s Association (CNYFA).
The scholarships were awarded by representatives from both organizations at a gathering at the Woodgate Fire Department on Wednesday, May 20.
The scholarships will assist McGough with expenses at SUNY Alfred where he will be studying mechanical engineering.
Tyler is the son of Bill and Becky McGough of Woodgate.
