Town of Webb Police personnel participated in Operation Safe Stop Education and Enforcement Day on Thursday, April 16, joining law enforcement agencies from across New York state in the initiative to promote school bus safety.
As part of the effort, Officers Kevin Birtle and A.J. Silverman followed Town of Webb UFSD buses on their south- and north-bound routes at the 3 p.m. dismissal, watching for drivers in violation of Section 1174 of the Vehicle & Traffic Law which prohibits the passing of stopped school buses.
According to statisics, an estimated 50,000 motor vehicles illegally pass New York state school buses every day.
The penalty for a first-time violation is a $250 to $400 fine, five points on the violator’s license and/or possibly 30 days in jail.
