MAC’s Safe Ride has adopted the annual Let It Snow 5K Run/Walk which has been traditionally held on the first Sunday in December.
Now in its third year, the organization committee is expecting more community members and visitors than ever to come out in full force donning holiday attire!
The race starts at the Old Forge Fire Hall at 9 a.m. on December 7 and heads down Main Street and into Thendara and back.
Prizes are awarded to Overall Male and Female coming in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each age category, and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for Best Costume.
The previous two years the race was part of the second weekend of activities during Adirondack Christmas on Main Street, however, with the event back to its original one weekend run—the weekend following Thanksgiving—MAC’s Safe Ride has assumed sponsorship.
All proceeds of the fun run will help MAC’s Safe Ride maintain their late-night alternative transportation system.
The MAC’s Board of Directors believe the race is scheduled at a perfect time to remind the public of the dangers of drinking and driving during the holiday season.
MAC’s Safe Ride, an acronym for Matt and Craig, is a livery service that grew in response to an alcohol-related car accident that claimed the lives of two young-adult best friends and forever changed the lives of many others.
The idea for MAC’s Safe Ride came within the days following the tragic crash, in the Fall of 2009, when so many of Matt and Craig’s friends were gathering to comfort each other and to remember their many good times.
The worry of keeping them safe was eliminated when a community member offered their 15-passenger van and they had a volunteer driver to safely transport them from one destination to another.
Since its inception on New Year’s Eve 2010, MAC’s has grown and has provided close to 14,000 rides.
Young, old, community members and visitors have all taken advantage of the transportation service that has been operated by volunteers.
With the rising numbers and commitment—and without Old Forge and its surrounding areas having any sort of public transportation or taxi service—MAC’s is considering the idea of hiring drivers to cover the demand.
MAC’s is seeking sponsorship for the race by businesses or individuals interested in donating a small item for the 250 swag bags. Suggested items include: pens, chapstick, hand warmers, gift certificates or coupons.
Donations of items to be used as raffle prizes for participants following the race are also needed.
Sponsors will have their names listed on the Let It Snow t-shirts that will be distributed to racers.
