Free public parking of boat trailers at the Old Forge ice skating rink location, during summer, was discussed by the Town of Webb Board at its monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 13th, at the town’s Municipal Building.
“What began as an accommodation to try to serve tourists, I believe is getting out of hand, especially last summer,” said Ted Riehle, Town of Webb Supervisor.
Some trailers had remained so long, unmoved, that weeds sprouted, said Councilwoman Kate Russell.
Discussion between board members had them concluding that too many people are taking advantage of the free space, and using it in a manner that was unintended by the town.
The town had hoped that the space would provide a convenience for short-term visitors.
Instead, the lot has been absorbing the trailers of those simply preferring that they not be parked in their own backyards.
Russell suggested the requirement of an inexpensive permit to park the trailers in the lot.
Agreeing with the permit idea, Supervisor Riehle recommended that there be a time-frame of two weeks with a fee of ten dollars.
There was also discussion of towing and monetary fines for those that failed to remove their trailers by their due dates.
Councilman Mike Ross said a plan needs to be formed now if it is to be implemented by summer.
Local businessman, Dan Rivet, suggested simply putting up a few signs saying something along the lines of “boat trailer permitted for two weeks, after that, it will be towed at owner’s expense.”
Councilman Ross agreed.
“I think we should start with signs this year, and possibly work on getting an ordinance ready for next year.” Ross said.
Councilwoman Russell recommended that the signs be worded in such a way, as to avoid confusion: Only trailers allowed—no boats.
Members of the board will be deciding on precise wording for the signs. Once ordered, the signs should be ready for posting within two weeks, Riehle said.
