Senior Kelsey Simpson comes from a family in the medical field, and says she’s really enjoyed her science classes here at the Town of Webb.
As a result she’s planning to attend the University at Albany to major in Biochemistry. Eventually she hopes to go into medical research.
Though Kelsey had also considered Cornell University and Roberts Wesleyan College, Albany attracted her from the start.
“It has one of the top research stations in the nation,” she said.
Kelsey would love to look into genetics and autism. Her mother and stepfather are both nurses, her dad is a nurse and her grandmother is an EMT.
“My mom really wanted me to look at nursing, because she loves it and because of the jobs available; but it was never something that appealed to me,” Kelsey said.
A heavy aspect of nursing is the human interaction. “I would rather be playing with genes and mutating things,” she said.
One of her favorite teachers is Ms. Farmer, who Kelsey has for AP Environmental and AP Biology.
Mr. Cunningham is great too she said, because he is “very understanding, personable and intricate; he’s relatable to the students,” a trait that really appeals to her. And you still learn from him, she added.
Simpson served as Yearbook Editor this year. She also helped out in the community wherever she could, including blood drives and community projects. She also volunteers at the Humane Society in Utica.
“I try to be involved as much as possible.” Kelsey’s been unable to do sports, which she says is a big thing up here, adding, “It’s hard when you can’t do that.”
She also works full time during the summer at the Candy Cottage.
On her Senior class, Simpson said, “I like that we can all be very different and not have cliques. You can intermingle with anybody.”
“I love the school and the close knit community,” she said, adding that she feels like she’s gotten a very good education here and really likes the atmosphere.
On leaving Old Forge to go away to college she said, “I’ve grown up with people and they are like my family. I’ll miss how close-knit we are.”
