Service to be announced for Virginia D. Adkins, 96

Virginia D. (Ginny) Adkins, 96, of Raleigh, NC died January 14, 2014. She was born in Pittsburgh, PA to Anne and James Durning.

After being raised in Pittsburgh, she lived most of her adult life in New York State, before retiring to Raleigh in 1982.

She was an artist, whose formal training was at Syracuse University. She was very active in the art community in Raleigh, which she embraced with gusto throughout her retirement. 

She was an active artist with the ‘portrait’ group at Sertoma Art Center. Her works showed at Sertoma, Goldsboro, the Women’s Club in Raleigh, Raleigh Fine Art Society, View Art Center in Old Forge, NY, the Munson Williams Proctor Arts Institute in Utica, NY and various venues in Pittsburgh.

She was also an active volunteer at Rex Hospital, the North Carolina Museum of Art and Wake Visual Art Exchange.

Ginny is survived by her four daughters; Terry Adkins of New York City; Jameson (Barney) Baxter of Barrington, IL and North Palm Beach, FL; Leslie (Billy) Gunnels of Fairfax, VA and Estero, FL; and Allison (Bob) Volkmann of Venice, FL and Inlet, NY.

She is also survived by her several grandchildren, grandchildren-in-law, and four great grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of her life will be announced. The family requests that remembrances to Virginia be made to an art museum of your choice, or to View, the arts center of Old Forge, at P.O. Box 1144, Old Forge, NY 13420.
