Service planned for Morgan P. Roderick, 86

Morgan Roderick

Morgan Roderick

Morgan P. Roderick, of The Valley, Syracuse, passed away suddenly on January 11, 2013, while visiting his daughter in Richmond, VA. He was 86.

Morgan (Rod, as his friends and family called him) spent many hours of his youth playing ball at many of the area ball fields around Syracuse, and  he loved to swim anywhere he could.

Besides his ball glove, his prized possession was his bicycle, which took him to the hills of LaFayette to pick apples all day, or to Drumlins to caddie as many rounds as he could to earn money.

In the summer of 1942, at age 16, Morgan’s love of the outdoors led him and three friends by single speed bikes to the Adirondack Mountains, where they intended to spend the summer camping at Eighth Lake and working at odd jobs before returning to Syracuse for school.

Morgan attended Onondaga Valley Academy, but at age 17, joined the Navy during WWII after Pearl Harbor, and volunteered for the Submarine Service.

His submarine, the USS Haddo, served on patrol in the Pacific, and was a tender to the Missouri during the signing of The Articles of Surrender in Tokyo Bay, which ended the war with Japan.

He returned home to Syracuse after the war, finished high school at Central Tech, and in 1951, graduated from New York State Ranger School in Wanakena, NY.  Continue reading

Central Ad’k Cardboard Sled Race circuit competition starts Saturday

Carly and Lillian

The Towns of Long Lake, Indian Lake, Inlet and Webb have joined forces for the inaugural Central Adirondack Cardboard Sled Racing Circuit which will kick-off on Saturday, January 19 at the Long Lake Winter Carnival.

According to Inlet Information Officer Adele Burnett, the racing circuit was the brainchild of Long Lake Parks and Recreation Director Alex Roalsvig.

Chandler-and-Katarina-Seaman-O'Brien

Roalsvig suggested the regional competition after noting that each of the participating towns features cardboard sled racing as one of its winter carnival activities.

Participation in the competition is free and open to the public. Racers must compete in three out of the four races to qualify for points.

Points will be given for race time, best design, and participation and will be tallied following the final race at Inlet’s Frozen Fire and Lights celebration.

Racers must use the same sleds throughout the competition, but are allowed to make minimal improvements as necessary.  Continue reading

Congressman Bill Owens paid a visit to Old Forge on Friday, January 11 to meet with area business owners and Town of Webb Publicity Director Mike Farmer to discuss their concerns regarding the local tourism industry.

Owens, who was accompanied by staff from his Watertown office, is familiarizing himself with the region following the recent redistricting which resulted in his jurisdiction over District 21.

Among business operators visited by Owens were Kelly and Katie Noonan, representing Old Forge Camping Resort, Enchanted Forest/Water Safari, and Water’s Edge Inn.

The Noonans expressed their concern over the effects that a large proposed jump in the minimum wage would have on their payroll. They described how their 30-person year-round staff increases to 400 in the summer at Water Safari alone.

They also discussed increases in health insurance costs, as well as delays in implementing Obama’s health care reforms.

Farmer escorted Owens to the Visitor Information Center where he was joined by Herkimer County Legislator Patrick Russell and Webb Councilwoman Kate Russell.

From there, the group departed for McCauley Mountain Ski Area where Owens talked with McCauley staff and witnessed first-hand the activity on the slopes and inside the chalet.

Council-woman Russell, who serves on the McCauley Mountain Improvement Committee,  asked for Owens’ support for funding to make needed improvements at the chalet, chairlift and trails.   Continue reading
