The Towns of Long Lake, Indian Lake, Inlet and Webb have joined forces for the inaugural Central Adirondack Cardboard Sled Racing Circuit which will kick-off on Saturday, January 19 at the Long Lake Winter Carnival.

According to Inlet Information Officer Adele Burnett, the racing circuit was the brainchild of Long Lake Parks and Recreation Director Alex Roalsvig.

Roalsvig suggested the regional competition after noting that each of the participating towns features cardboard sled racing as one of its winter carnival activities.

Participation in the competition is free and open to the public. Racers must compete in three out of the four races to qualify for points.

Points will be given for race time, best design, and participation and will be tallied following the final race at Inlet’s Frozen Fire and Lights celebration.

Racers must use the same sleds throughout the competition, but are allowed to make minimal improvements as necessary.

Cardboard sled racing involves imagination, ingenuity, cardboard, duct tape and unpredictable wintry conditions.

Racers must be prepared for heavy snow, icy tracks and the occasional winter thaw affecting the condition of courses.

Registration for the first race on Saturday at Long Lake’s Mt. Sabattis Recreation Area will begin at noon. The race starts at 1 p.m.

The races in Old Forge and Indian Lake will both be held on Sunday, February 17.

Indian Lake’s “Redneck Cardboard and Duck Tape Sled Show” will take place during Winterfest at 1 p.m. at the Indian Lake Ski Hill.

The cardboard sled race in Old Forge will be held during Winter Carnival at McCauley Mountain, beginning at 3 p.m.

The final race is scheduled for 1 p.m. on the sledding hill in Fern Park on Sunday, February 23 as part of Inlet’s Frozen Fire and Lights Festival. The champion of the circuit will be announced during the festival.

All ages are welcome to participate, but only one champion will be named.
