Community Transportation Service Van to celebrate 25th Anniversary, July 17th

The board of the Community Transportation Service (CTS) invites volunteer staff, drivers, members and guests to a picnic on Tuesday, July 17 at noon to help celebrate its 25th anniversary of service to the Central Adirondack community.

The picnic will begin at noon at St. Anthony of Padua’s Parish Hall in Inlet.

The CTS van provides free transportation to local and outlying medical appointments for the elderly and those no longer able to drive themselves.

It was in 1987 that Harold (Yogi) Best, Fr. Jim Lamitie, Ruth Brussel, Joan Liddle, George Milroy, Rosemary Coffey and Barbara Groves (plus doctor-counsel) set up shop with Yogi’s much used van for transportation to supply a free ride to the  cities of Utica, Syracuse, Albany, Rochester, etc. to those who needed medical attention but who did not drive.

They also sent out a request for capable volunteer drivers—with impeccable driving records—to operate the van. Continue reading

Mountainman bringing first Stand Up Paddleboarding Festival to Old Forge

Local yoga instructor Kristin Helmer does a headstand on a SUP on Fourth Lake

Mountainman Outdoor Supply Company will sponsor the inaugural SUP (Stand Up Paddleboarding)  Festival at two separate venues in Old Forge on Saturday, July 21st.

The SUP Fest will take place on the Old Forge lakefront and at Mountainman Outdoor Supply Company on Route 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and will include a race, free demos, lessons, clinics and instruction on what Mountainman owner John Nemjo calls “the most exciting new activity to hit paddlesports in decades.”

The day-long event will feature activities for everyone in the family, regardless of their level of SUP experience.

There will be a 3-mile SUP race starting and ending at the Old Forge Pond at 11:30 a.m., with prizes of up to $100 in mens and womens categories. Proceeds from the race will benefit the Kommunity Youth Activity Center (KYAC) in Old Forge.

“The Central Adirondack Kiwanis Club is doing some great work with KYAC, and hosting an SUP race seemed a great way to help out,” Nemjo said.

An SUP is essentially an oversized surfboard that is specifically designed for use on either flatwater or surf.

The volume of the surfboard makes it so the rider is able to stand up and paddle with both mobility and stability.

“Stand Up Paddling is an easy-to-learn watersport that offers a full body workout. What I like about the SUP is that I can take off right from my dock and paddle for 30 minutes for a quick workout, or longer for a nice relaxing paddle,” Nemjo said.

SUP industry experts will be on-hand throughout the day to answer questions and demonstrate the ease of the sport. Continue reading

Growing up Adirondack by Mitch Lee

Summer and feeling the pressure of building an outdoor fire pit

It was a breezy July morning when my father came up with a scheme to build a stone and mortar outdoor fireplace.

The day before we had fashioned some planks into a square and poured concrete in to form a base pad.

I helped by wetting the material he was putting into the giant cement mixer.

I used all my might to spin the side wheel to fold together the batter of stone and sand inside the large metal cavern.

Once we had enough material my father pulled the barrel over to dump the mushy gray mess into the square.

We had a little material left over which we poured over the top of the rock break wall near the driveway.

As my father troweled the material around to make a good flat surface, I tried to kill the many deerflies who had come out to cheer us on in our project.
