Study shows Environmental Protection Fund builds NY economy

New York’s Environmental Protection Fund (EPF) supports industries that generate approximately $40 billion annually for the state’s economy while sustaining hundreds of thousands of jobs, according to an report released last week by The Trust for Public Land, a national conservation group.

“The findings… show that the stronger the EPF is, the more local economies benefit,” said Jessica Sargent-Michaud, an economist for The Trust.

“As we conduct these studies around the nation, we are finding, time and time again, that investments in land conservation, urban development, and environmental infrastructure, yield returns that sustain and stimulate local and regional economies,” she said. Continue reading

Let’s talk Strand movies—or something else maybe..

Hey this is Rosy Rox, the girl around town, in the know, and here to answer your questions.

I like to review restaurants, movies, plays, et cetera.

I specialize in teen advice, mainly because I know what the teens here in the ADK go through. I should know—I’m one myself. And no one understands a teen like a teen.

So, bring on your questions or problems, e-mail me rosyrox.adk@gmail.com

Rosy’s Random Review: I recently watched “This Means War” at the Strand Theatre. The movie, which stars Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine and Tom Hardy, is about two agents who are both falling for the same girl. They both compete to win her love. Continue reading

Lake safety tip: What to know before venturing onto the ice

by Jason Pallotta, Assistent Chief, Inlet Fire Dept.

Jason Pallotta, Inlet Fire Department Assistant Chief, is answering the question, When is it safe to go out on the ice?, which is particularly worth considering given this winter’s fluctuating temperatures.

There is no sure answer to the question as you can’t judge the ice’s strength simply by its appearance, age, thickness, temperatue or whether or not the ice is covered by snow.

Strength is based on all these factors.

Keep in mind that there is NO SUCH THING as 100 percent safe ice.

Here are some general guidelines for New Clear Ice: 2” or less – stay off ice; 4” for ice fishing and other activities on foot; 6” for snowmobiles or ATVs; 8” to 12” for cars and small pickup trucks; about 12” to 15” for medium size trucks. Continue reading

The list of staples at the pantry include juice, canned fruit and vegetables, dry milk, pancake mix, peanut butter, tuna, rice, coffee, tea, and cereal, Tobin said, with additional refrigerated and frozen items also available.

“Frozen hamburger, ham steaks and chicken are provided at cost by Dan’s Foodland in Eagle Bay, and we also have baby food and diapers,” she said. Continue reading

St. Patrick’s: ‘Passing of the Crutch’ ceremony set March 9

All are invited to a ceremonial “Passing of the Crutch” by last year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade marshals, the McNally sisters, to this year’s marshals, the Kellys of the Central Adirondacks, on Friday, March 9 at 6:30 p.m. outside of Souvenir Village on Main Street in Old Forge.

The gesture, according to parade co-chairman Chip Kiefer, is a twist on the tradition of many Irish parade organizers around the world who honor their past and present parade marshals by holding a symbolic passing of the shillelagh ceremony.

The crutch is an Adirondack archive purchased by Katie Boesché at the Town of Webb Historical Association’s auction. As the legend goes, the crutch was loaned by early area doctors to residents who were recuperating from various ailments. Continue reading
