Beavers easily trapped when emerging for fresh food supply

Last week’s heavy rains took the snow down to nearly nothing, however it did leave a hard crust on top that you could walk on. The critters—Coyotes, Foxes, Bobcats, Fisher, Pine Marten, and even some Raccoons—have been out running around on it.

At first I was surprised to see Coon tracks as you usually don’t see them for another month.

But then I saw evidence of them in several places, playing around in muddy inlets and outlets of some lakes and along streams.

For most of the other critters it‘s breeding time so the males cover lots of ground looking for receptive females. Continue reading

Can I still claim my older children as dependents?

Is there an age limit on claiming my children as dependents? There are two types of dependents, a qualifying child and a qualifying relative.

A “qualifying child” may enable a taxpayer to claim several tax benefits, such as head of household filing status, the exemption for a dependent, the child tax credit, the child and dependent care credit and the earned income tax credit.

In general, to be a taxpayer’s qualifying child, a person must satisfy four tests: Relationship, Residence, Age & Support. Continue reading

Kiwanis Club names Mallory Kleps as Webb school’s Student of Month

The Kiwanis Club of the Central Adirondacks has announced that its Student of the Month for February is Mallory Kleps. Mallory is the daughter of David and Sharon Kleps of Old Forge and is a senior at Town of Webb Union Free School in Old Forge.

The Student of the Month is a program initiated by the Kiwanis Club, in cooperation with the Town of Webb School, that recognizes senior students.

Each month from September to April the school administrators will select a Student of the Month who will receive $50 and with his/her parents are invited to a Kiwanis Recognition Event to make a brief presentation.

In May, the Kiwanis Scholarship Committee will select a Student of the Year who will receive $500.

The Town of Webb Police Benevolent Association (PBA) will partner with Central Adirondack Kiwanis in the Student of the Year award.

The selection criteria for the program includes community service, academics, athletic involvement, student need, and extra curricular activities.
