Funeral service held for Joyce Sliter, 87

Joyce Sliter

Joyce Martin Sliter, 87, of Port Leyden, passed away on Monday morning, August 8th at the Sunset Nursing Home in Boonville.

Joyce was born in Lowville, NY July 8, 1924, the daughter of the late Benjamin and Mabel Lehman Martin. She attended Lowville Academy and Central School where she was a member of the National Honor Society. Following High School graduation, she attended the Utica School of Commerce.

During World War II she was employed as a clerk typist at the Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome NY. On October 28, 1944 she married Kenneth Sliter at the Methodist Church Parsonage in Lowville.

Following World War II she, with her husband, owned and operated the Port Florist Flower Shop and Garden Center for 34 Years. Later she helped in the semiretirement business, The Old Forge Landscape Service in the Old Forge area.

She was a member of the Port Leyden Community Church, and was a former member and president of the Utica-Rome Camp of Gideons Int. Auxiliary, the Port Leyden Monday Club, and the Eastern Stars.

In addition to being a mother and homemaker, she had many interests including Bible Study and the study of her family’s genealogy. She enjoyed collecting glassware, and had an extensive collection of Depression Glass.

In recent years, she and her husband have enjoyed completing and framing Jigsaw puzzles, and have given over two hundred puzzles to friends and businesses in the area.

Joyce was predeceased by her parents, and two brothers, Harrison and Wilbur Martin. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth; three daughters, Bethany Ardizzone (Gary) of Hudson, FL, Donna Moshier of Liverpool, NY, and Susan Winters (James) of Forestport NY; and one son, Timothy of Huntington Beach CA; her three grandchildren, Tracy Moshier of Guam, Kelly Moshier of Syracuse, and Benjamin Winters of Forestport; and one great-grandson Zehr Moshier-Fabro of Guam.

She also leaves one sister, Violet Hanno of Lowville and one brother, Quentin Martin of Fort Mill, SC.

A funeral service was held at the Bossuot-Lundy Funeral Home, Inc. in Copenhagen on Thursday, August 11.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice. The family would like to offer a special thank you to the staff and friends of The Sunset Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their care and kindness while Joyce was a resident there.
