Dedication held for completion of Inlet’s Elaine Townsend Trail

A dedication ceremony for the newly-completed Elaine Townsend Trail along Route 28 in Inlet was held on Saturday, October 27.

The trail, which begins at the Inlet Golf Course and proceeds north to the Townsend property, and across Route 28 to the Seventh Lake House, was constructed in memory of Elaine Townsend.

Prior to her passing, Elaine had hopes that a safe walkway would be available to not only her grandchildren, but to all those who ventured along Route 28.

Her four children, John, Becky, Don and Andy, and her grandchildren were among those present at the ceremony to see her dream become a reality.

A plaque memorializing her will be placed on a rock at the break of the trail leading to a snowmobile trail.

Construction of the trail was made possible by a grant from the Laura Jane Musser Foundation, which was secured through the combined efforts of CAP-21 and its former grant writer Julie Benzo Barber, and former Inlet Highway Superintendent Dayton Cleaveland.

The Town of Inlet provided construction support to C & S Engineering of Syracuse, lead contractor of the project.

During the ceremony, Inlet Clerk Patty Wittmeyer thanked CAP-21, Dayt Cleaveland, NYSDOT, C & S Engineering, MCI Construction for the hydroseeding, the Inlet Town Board, High-way Superintendent Hansen and his employees, and the residents along the trail who allowed the space to construct this path.
