Inlet: Memory Walk to honor Walter Schmid on June 16th

The Town of Inlet will join the Alzheimer’s Association’s national effort to raise funds for Alzheimer’s research by hosting the 3rd Annual Memory Walk on Saturday, June 16th.

As in past year’s, the walk will honor the memory of an area resident who suffered from Alzheimer’s.

This year’s honoree will be longtime Inlet resident Walter Schmid who succumbed to the disease on January 17 of this year. Walter was well-known and loved for his generosity and his skiing talent which he was always happy to share with others.

Upon arriving to the area from his native Germany, Walter established a network of cross-country ski trails near his home on the South Shore Road.

The trails were eventually extended throughout Fern Park.

He taught the sport to Inlet school children beginning at the earliest stage and saw to it that they had equipment to use to improve their skills.

Many then became very skilled skiers throughout their high school years.

Walter worked with the Town to improve these trails, grooming them and skiing many miles a day up until he could no longer participate in the sport he loved.

Participants of the Memory Walk will walk from Arrowhead Park along the TOBIE Path to Eagle Bay and back, a distance of approximately 2.5 miles.

Upon return to Arrowhead Park there will be refreshments, live music, and a Chinese auction. Informational materials on Alzheimer’s disease will be available on-site for pick-up.

Commemorative t-shirts will also be available, including the new design of a ski boot and poles in honor of Walter’s passion for skiing.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. at Arrowhead Park and continue until the 10 a.m. walk begins. Online donations will be accepted at: inletalzwalk@kintera.org. More information on can be found at the website: inletny.com, listed under events; or by calling the Inlet Information Office at (315) 357-5501 or the Town Clerk at 357-5771.

Sixty percent of the proceeds from the walk will benefit the Alzheimer’s organizations for research and 40 percent will support Inlet’s RECIL program which provides respite for caregivers and socialization for the elderly and those with forms of dementia.

The program is available every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
