Walter Schmid, 81

Walter C. Schmid, 81, of Inlet died January 17, 2012 at the Heritage Healthcare Center.

He was born February 27, 1930 in Spaichengen, Germany and immigrated to the United States in November of 1958 to follow the love of his life to Inlet where he married Anna Hagen on February 28, 1959.

He worked as a carpenter and in the late 60’s he introduced Cross Country Skiing to Inlet developing an extensive trail system and established the Inlet Ski Touring Center.

He instructed the Inlet School children skiing for over 30 years.

He also owned the Wine Shop in Inlet from 1981-2001.Walter was a professional photographer who loved to share his pictures with the community. He loved the Adirondacks, nature and above all taking people with him on ski trips.

He is survived by his wife Anna, his three sons and daughters-in-law: Herbert and Carol Schmid, of Inlet; Edward and Judith Schmid of New Hartford; and Hans and Laurie Schmid of Thendara; his grandchildren Milinda Stewart and husband Jason of Santa Rosa, CA; Stephen Franks, Jr. and wife Erica of Cazenovia; Christopher Schmid and wife April of Chesapeake, VA; Cole, Matthew and Emma Schmid of New Hartford; Hanson, Tayler and Ella Schmid of Thendara and seven great-grandchildren; his brother and sister-in-law Helmut and Mary Schmid of Germany and several nieces, nephews and extended family in Germany.

The family wishes to thank the staffs of Claire Bridge and Heritage Health Care for all of their care.

The funeral will be held on Friday, January 20 at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Church, Inlet. Interment will be in the spring in Riverview Cemetery.

Calling hours are on Thursday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Dimbleby, Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral Home, 128 Fern Avenue, Old Forge.
