Old Forge to host ’11 ACW Writing Retreat

Since 2005, The Adirondack Center for Writing (ACW) at Paul Smith’s College has hosted an October Writing Retreat for up to ninety high school students.

This year, thanks to generous funding from the Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties, ACW has decided to accommodate the demand from students and teachers alike by offering the program at View, the new arts center in Old Forge, as well as at Paul Smith’s.

For two days students will have the opportunity to work with and learn from three of the nation’s top performance poets.

This year’s workshop features Roger Bonair-Agard, Rachel McKibbens, and Samantha Thornhill. All three writers are widely published and respected and sought-after educators.

The writing and reading intensive program will include a seminar on presenting one’s writing in front of an audience, concluding in a performance by the three teaching poets.

The Old Forge retreat is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, October 18 and 19 at View, with the featured poets offering a public performance at the Old Forge Library on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Any teacher who wishes to bring students can call (518) 327-6278 or email: acwevents@gmail.com. Homeschooled students are welcome. Registration is required. The per student cost for the two days is $20, which includes lunch.

ACW is based at Paul Smith’s College and is supported by its membership and public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.
