It’s true. People are still talking about One Square Mile of Hope 2014… especially the staff at Upstate Medical Center’s new Cancer Research Facility in Syracuse.
Last fall, a few members of the OSM core committee visited Upstate to present $15,000 of the event’s proceeds to the Research staff and $10,000 to Golisano Children’s Hospital’s for Clarabug’s Quest for a cure for childhood cancers.
Indeed, they seemed very pleased that OSM thought of them in distributing the profits from the Guinness World Record gathering of boats on Fourth Lake last September 13.
Imagine the staff’s surprise when they were informed that the OSM Committee members had decided to give them $30,000 more.
This contribution is from the residue of funds garnered from the sale of posters, hats, leftover shirts.
This donation will be divided three ways with $15,000 going to the Cancer Research Center, another $10,000 to Clarabug’s Fund, and $5,000 to a new benefactor, Dr. Hafeez, who runs a psychiatric service for breast cancer patients at Upstate.
As everyone knows, most Inlet residents are much too busy with work and visitors in the summer season to find a time when a group could once again visit Syracuse for the check presentation.
So, on July 30, Upstate came to Inlet in the person of Toni Gary, who deals with the Hospital’s Public Relations.
