Town of Webb senior John Gaffney, 18, came to the Town of Webb school in fourth grade from Inlet.
John has worked at Rivett’s Marina, the work having interested him. “It looked really fun,” he said.
Consequently, he plans to extend the experience in the fall, when he will attend the International Yacht Restoration School in Newport, Rhode Island.
“I like working with my hands, and this all involves wood work,” he said.
His favorite class is Technology. “You don’t have to sit down and listen to a lecture. It’s mostly hands-on,” he said.
John said he doesn’t have a favorite teacher, but rather appreciates them all.
He has been a member of the Webb varsity soccer, basketball, baseball teams. He also competed with the boys’ alpine ski team in his junior year.
“We won the Section III championship that year,” he said.
He is a member of Key Club, and he’s a student representative for Student Council.
John was the Kiwanis Club’s Student of the Month this past January.
Outside of school, he likes to hunt, fish, hike and work at the marina.
“I enjoy hanging out with my friends, too,” he said.
Mike and Loretta Gaffney are his parents. Loretta is the Guidance Office Secretary at the Webb school, and Mike is a Corrections Officer at Mid-State Correc-tional Facility.
John has two sisters, Mara and Michaelina, and a brother, Michael.
This summer he plans to work at Rivett’s Marina again, while preparing for school.
He said his parents have been great influences on him.
“They always told me to find and devote your life to something you enjoy and to follow your dreams,” he said.
Participating in the annual Columbus Day events is his favorite memory.
“I plan on coming back for this year’s Columbus Day, if my school plans allow it,” he said.
“I will miss seeing my family and friends every day,” he said.
John said he is looking forward to graduation. “I’m ready to try out some new things and see new places,” he said.
