Open Houses held at the Otter Lake and Old Forge Fire Departments on Saturday and Sunday, April 25 and 26, respectively, were well attended and successful in recruiting new volunteers, said Otter Lake Chief Jeff Abrial and Old Forge Chief Charlie Bogardus.

The events were held in conjunction with RecruitNY, a state-wide initiative to attract more volunteer firefighters and emergency medical personnel to the ranks of community fire departments.

Current volunteers were on hand both days to offer tours of their fire houses, demonstrate gear and equipment, and answer questions on what it takes to become involved in the fire department.

Both chiefs said that visitors came equipped with great questions regarding home fire safety, such as the use of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

They expressed their thanks to their new recruits and to those who took the time to stop by, and also to their members who showed up to assist at the open houses.
