Ad’k Center for Writing accepts applications for Anne LaBastille writer residency program

Adirondack Center for Writing (ACW) will offer an opportunity for writers to take part in a two-week writing residency at Twitchell Lake Lodge from October 10 through 24.

The residency is made possible by the estate of the late Anne LaBastille, author of Woodswoman and Beyond Black Bear Lake, and other books she wrote at her Twitchell Lake cabin.

Participants will paddle to visit the Bastille property at least once during the session.

The  residency provides space, time, and an inspiring landscape for regional and outside writers to work on their writing projects, a chance to unplug and connect with other writers, and to tap into their creative selves.

Rooms are single occupancy with private baths, and food is provided.

There will be no internet or cell phone service at the residency.

There is space for six writers. Three spots are reserved for regional authors, and the other spaces will be open to writers from around the world.

Writers in any genre are accepted. The quality of written submissions will be the primary consideration when accepting applications.

Submission guidelines and applications will be accepted through an online submission form found on ACW’s website, adirondackcenterforwriting.org, from April 15 through May 18. Late applications will not be considered.

All applicants will be notified of the status of their application by July 20.

Anne LaBastille was an Adirondack author who inspired a generation of naturalists, especially young women, with her book Woodswoman and its sequels, Beyond Black Bear Lake, Assignment: Wildlife, and Women and the Wilderness.

She gave wilderness workshops and lectures for over forty years and served on many conservation organizations in the Adirondack Mountains of New York, including 17 years on the Board of Commissioners of the Adirondack Park Agency.

She was a contributor to the Sierra Club and National Geographic, among many others. Until shortly before her death in 2011, she lived parttime at her cabin on Twitchell Lake.

A fund is being created at The Community Foundation of Herkimer & Oneida Counties to support and build this annual residency program.

Contributions are greatly appreciated. For more information call at  ACW (518) 354-2161 or the Community Foundation at (315) 735-8212.
