Herkimer County prescription drug discounts available to all residents

Herkimer County residents, regardless of age, income, or existing health coverage, are entitled to participate at no charge in a Discount Prescription Drug program called ProAct.

Residents who participate will receive cards that allow 10 to 20 percent discounts on brand name prescriptions.

Generic drugs are discounted 20 to 50 percent.

Members simply present their ProAct card to the pharmacy, when getting a refill or new prescription.

All pharmacies in Herkimer County are participants.

ProAct also participates with over 55,000 pharmacies nationwide.

And all prescription medications qualify for the discounts.

Also, included are discounts on laser vision correction: up to 50 percent off the national price.

The ProAct card can also be used for other vision care discounts, including eye exams, and glasses frames and lenses.

Discounts of 35 to 65 percent are available on name brand hearing aids, products, and services.

Pet medication discounts are also included.

For those that receive prescriptions by mail, the discount card allows a 90-day supply at Health Direct Pharmacy Services, a division of Kinney Drugs.

Again, there is no age requirement, though the discount cards are available through the NY Connects/ Office for the Aging. Herkimer County residents should call (315) 867-1121 to paricipate.

The Herkimer County Discount Prescription Drug Program was developed by the County Legislature to help pay the cost of prescription medicines.

The legislature encourages all county residents to use this program, though it is especially beneficial to people without prescription coverage, including the self-employed, according to Legislator Patrick Russell.

Additionally, there is no cost to either county government or county residents.
