Deb Carhart: Former CAP-21 head continues with community activity

Deb Carhart, although now retired from CAP-21, said she maintains a strong connection to the organization and continues to stay active as a volunteer.

She had served as Executive Director for the past four years, and considers CAP-21’s attracting of Main Street Grants a significant achievement.

“We received the first funding for Inlet’s Main Street Grant in 2008 and we’ll be finishing up in Old Forge in 2011,” she said.

A second round of applications will be processed this fall under the guidance of Carhart’s successor, Nick Rose.

“Hopefully it will fund a lot of projects that still need to be done,” she said.

Carhart said she is also proud that CAP-21 was able to help establish the local Farmer’s Market in Old Forge.

“It was a community effort. A group of folks came together, and with the help of CAA and CAP-21, and of course, Kelly Hamlin, it has turned out to be a terrific community event,” she said.

A year ago Carhart informed the CAP-21 Board of Directors that she planned to retire as soon as they found the right person to take over her position.

“It has worked out great to find Nick. He brings a set of experiences specific to community development and grant writing that is very valuable to the community,” she said, adding, “Nick is the right guy at the right time.”

Along with volunteering at CAP-21, Deb is also a member of the Board of Adirondack Economic Development Corporation (AEDC) and a board member of View.

“I’m not going anyplace. I’ll be involved with the things I really care for and am really passionate about. So, it hasn’t been goodbye in any way,” she said.

Carhart said she has a new grandson, along with several other grandsons in Florida, and is happy that her time is more flexible for spending with them.
