The Town of Inlet will host a “Shine a Light on Lung Cancer” vigil at the Town Hall for the third year on Thursday, November 13 at 7 p.m.
This is the date selected for the myriad of vigils held throughout the U.S.and in many other countries.
In the past the vigil has honored friends and relatives from the Old Forge and Inlet area who have succumbed to the disease.
Those remembered in the past two vigils will once again be mentioned during the
ceremony.
If you have someone whose name should be added to our list of lung cancer victims, you are invited to contact Adele Burnett by phone at (315)357-5501 or by e-mail at info@inletny.com.
This year’s vigil seems even more pertinent since lung cancer has so recently touched our communities.
We have lost Sherry Grimm and Art Brockner during the past year, and now Eileen Tobin has been given the diagnosis and is about to start treatment.
Amazing as it may seem, more women die of lung cancer annually than die of breast cancer. And yet, breast cancer research fundraisers are constantly in the news.
Just this year, One Square Mile of Hope in Inlet raised well over $100,000 for breast cancer. How many times are lung cancer fund-raisers advertised?
“Shine a Light on Lung Cancer” is not a fund-raiser. Its purpose is to make the public focus on the disease and recognize those who have been lost due to its virulence.
This year’s Inlet vigil will again be held in the Senior Room at the Inlet Town Hall and will follow basically the same format as the past two vigils: opening prayer, welcome, a medical expert’s take on progress in treating lung cancer.
This year’s speaker will be Beverly Ischia, a Physician’s Assistant, and former Inlet resident.
Anyone who wishes may share his/her experience in dealing with the death of a friend or relative.
A reading of names to be remembered will follow, as will refreshments and a chance for conversation and camaraderie.
You are welcome to bring photos or photo boards for display on our table of remembrance.
Won’t you let us know of anyone whom you would like added to our remembrance list?
And won’t you join us for an hour on Thursday evening, November 13?
