Family Milestone: Tim Foley goes solo with Old Forge law firm

Attorney Tim Foley of Old Forge has announced the opening of his new Foley Law Firm, LLC, in Old Forge.

After more than 25 years in partnership with the Foley & Frye Law Firm of Utica and Old Forge, and more than 20 years in partnership with Dick Frye, Tim has decided to devote his professional energies full-time to Old Forge and the surrounding communities.

His late father, William J. Foley, who founded the Foley & Frye Law Firm in Utica, also maintained an office in Old Forge beginning in the mid-1940s on a one-day-a-week basis.

In 1985, Tim joined his father’s practice after he was admitted to the New York State Bar.

“And I had the privilege of practicing law with my father in the firm for more than 15 years,” he said.

In 1988, Tim opened the Old Forge office full-time and moved to Old Forge on a two-year trial basis, dividing his time between the Old Forge and Utica offices.

At the time he told his father that if the Old Forge Office was an economic asset to the firm he and his family would stay and it would become their home.

Before long, Old Forge became the permanent home for him, his wife Patty and their infant daughter, Molly.

“It was the best family decision we ever made,” he said.

Now, after more than twenty years, he decided that splitting his time between the Utica office and his thriving Old Forge office is no longer efficient.

Tim joins a long line of Foleys who have owned and operated businesses in the Old Forge area.

His father, a Town of Webb School graduate, grew up in Old Forge. His grandfather, Patrick, who passed away in 1958 at the age of 90, owned and operated Foley Hardware on Main Street and Foley Lumber in Thendara for many years.

The business was eventually turned over to Tim’s uncle, John Foley and in later years to Tim’s cousin, Jack.

Tim got some early practical experience in local business by working summers at Foley’s Northwoods Inn on Fourth Lake which was owned by his father,  his Aunt Mildred and Uncle Jim Foley many years ago.

Back then the hotel was strictly a summer resort and Tim worked there every summer from the time he was 16 through his law school years.

Now, he is excited about opening his new Foley Law Firm and the opportunity for he and Patty, who has worked as his paralegal for the last 18 years, to serve the legal needs of their North Country friends and neighbors.

“Patty is a tremendous partner and is as much a paralegal as any paralegal I’ve met. We work well together and we have benefited from the partnership. We’re a team,” he said.

The practice will continue to represent large and small businesses, families and individuals ranging from simple wills to complex estate plans/trusts.

Real estate transfers, contracts and disputes—including matrimonial matters—will continue to be part of his new practice.

“We want to be the firm that people go to, no matter what the problem or need,” Tim said in a prepared statement.

“Obviously, there are areas of law which fall outside of my expertise, but in that case I will still be able to help the client find the attorney or law firm he or she needs,” he added.

Although the name of the firm has changed, the location of the office in the Webb Building at the corner of Main and Sheard Streets and the phone number will remain the same.
