The 5th annual Memory Walk for Alzheimer’s took place in Inlet on a beautiful, sunny day in June. This year’s walk differed in that no single Alzheimer’s victim was honored.
Instead, the walk memorialized those who have passed and provided support for those who are now suffering with this disease.
The “Walk” raised $2,337 with about 25 walkers participating.
Our Chinese Auction was popular, and ticket holders won many wonderful prizes, including baskets of cheer, jewelry, a quilt, Avon and Tastefully Simple products, gift certificates for Zumba and TRX classes, a hand-painted flowerpot, and a basket for summer fun.The organizing committee would like to thank Roger Lind of the Inlet Golf Course for the use of golf carts so that those who could not walk the four-mile distance could still participate.
Thanks also to the Inlet Parks Department employees for setting up the tables and chairs and grill for us.
There were many who pledged on-line, making our event even more of a success.
Team Gaudin made a generous contribution, along with the famous “Purpleman,” and we thank you as well.
Sixty percent of the funds raised go to the Alzheimer’s Association, and the remaining 40 percent go to the Respite Center in Utica to help cover the expenses of the Respite Group that meets in Inlet on Wednesdays.
As with most health-related services these days, funds seem to be continually cut.
Helping Hands, HASCA, Respite of Utica, and Home Health Aides are trying to keep their services afloat, but are experiencing difficult times.
The Respite Program that services Inlet, Indian Lake, Long Lake, Raquette Lake and Old Forge is in jeopardy of being closed due to lack of funding.
It has been explained that the Program is running in the red now, and Respite Services of Utica is trying to find a way to continue the program.
Donations to any of the above health care groups could help to ensure their continuation for those who need to have this care.
As to the future of the Inlet Respite Program, we will just have to wait and see.
