Pontoon boats hazardous to navigate at night

To the Editor:

There are many pontoon/ party boats operating at night posing a possible hazard to other boaters and themselves. Many navigate displaying two white headlights!

It is not only illegal, according to Inland Rules of Navigation, but also a danger for others. Night vision is destroyed for the operator and also for other boaters.

With the increased traffic on the holiday weekend, it is important that all boaters display the proper red light on port side, green light on starboard and white light on the stern.

Proper lighting allows everyone to know who is traveling in what direction safely. As one who has navigated thousands of miles on lakes and oceans, I know the importance of following the rules. Everyone benefits.

Is there a decibel level for engine noise on the lakes? There are some boats which can be heard miles away, to the annoyance of many of our summer visitors.

Perhaps law enforcement can be helpful in directing owners of same to appropriate mufflers.
