Schools, parents, students gearing for Nano opportunities

I have heard for many years, from people in the our town, how great it would be for our kids to have good-paying job opportunities in our area, so our kids could stay here. Well, here is a great opportunity worth sharing with our younger people.

Parents may also want to discuss with high school superintendents, where our local schools are with their Nano Technology programs. Our kids will hopefully be on a nice track for some of these jobs on leaving high school.

Some nearby schools already preparing programs are Whitesboro and Notre Dame, where students will have qualifications for some of these good paying jobs once they graduate.

And according to reports, local schools, including SUNYIT, Mohawk Valley Community College, Herkimer County Community College and BOCES, have all developed curricula to help local job-seekers get the skills they may be lacking.

SUNYIT is the site of Quad-C, a $125 million, 250,000 square foot technology complex which will house a consortium of leading global technology companies.

Quad-C has already begun searching for people to fill its first 300 jobs, with a Nano Utica Job Fair to be held Tuesday, April 29.

It will take place from 12 noon to 4 p.m. at the SUNYIT Field House in Utica. Information and pre-registration is available at www.sunycnse.com/jobfair.aspx.

Senator James Seward said the following about the job fair.

“Nano Utica is set to transform our state’s economy and will help position New York as a new high-tech hotbed. Residents in close proximity to Utica should take advantage of this opportunity to get in on the ground floor of an exciting new venture.”

The job fair is being hosted by the governor’s office, the New York State Department of Labor, the SUNY College of Nanoscale Science & Engineering (CNSE), and SUNYIT. Between 300 and 1,500 job openings with annual salaries ranging from $35,000 to over $100,000 are expected at the Computer Chip Commerciali-zation Center (Quad-C).

Engineers, technicians, process operators, facilities operations technicians, and environmental health and safety officers are among the positions to be filled.

In addition, candidates are being sought for information technology, business operations, administrative, security, and cleaning and maintenance positions.

And this is only the beginning, according to Senator Seward.

So, young people and parents—be sure to monitor these promising employment possibilities as the future unfolds!
