Just Makes Scents, the all-natural bath and body shop in Old Forge, is wrapping up its first summer in Old Forge.
The store, located on Main Street across from the Town of Webb School, specializes in items that are made for sensitive skin.
Owner Donna Waterman sells a number of organic products and makes her own homemade sugar and facial scrubs. She said these homemade scrubs, which are 100% natural, are her biggest sellers.
“I’m very proud of that,” she said.
She makes the sugar scrubs in many different fragrances and often creates some with a seasonal theme. She is currently working on fragrances for the fall including mulled cider, brown sugar and fig, nutmeg and clove. She can also create custom-made fragrances.
“If you can dream it, I can do it,” says Waterman.
Other products include goat’s milk soap made in Marcy, NY, essential oils, and spiritual items. Waterman also carries products for men, babies, kids and pets and products such as scented body powder and soap on a rope, which are often hard to find.
Waterman, who said she has always had a passion for candles, started the business in 2009 in New Hartford with the urging of her daughter and husband.
But she knew then that candles would not be enough, so she expanded the type of products she would offer.
Waterman moved the store up to Old Forge from New Hartford Shopping Center in January of 2013.
Along with her came canine Harlee, the store mascot that not only greets customers at the door, but has its own Facebook page.
She said she is proud of the fact that she built the store from the ground up—a little bit at a time—and that she puts a lot of emphasis on customer service.
“I try my best to get what the customer wants,” she said.
